Will Michigan's new QB under Moore finally break Ohio State's dominance?

The departure of quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who got drafted in the NFL, has left Wolverines’ quarterback position vacant. McCarthy joined the Wolverines at its weakest form and helped the team achieve significant milestones under Sherrone Moore’s guidance. After a disappointing 2020 season when Michigan lost, his tweet went viral when he cheered the team: “Take three deep breaths and have faith.” In 2023, he led the team into the national championship and contributed with 240 out of 332 passes for 3000 yards.

To fill this gap, head coach Sherrone Moore is looking for a perfect fit: “He will take care of the football, he’ll be a playmaker, but he’ll put winning first.” Moore explained the qualities of  Wolverines’ new quarterback. Moore even talked with media houses and hinted at potential players who could be best for this role: junior Alex Orji, senior Davis Warren, and veteran Jack Tuttle. He further said, “They’ve all been superb,” and they will announce his name soon. “Could be the week of, could be the day of the game, stated Moore; “we’ll see.” That being said, let’s learn a bit more about these players.

Alex Orji has been a significant player for the Wolverines during the 2023 championship as a backup quarterback. Although Orji has limited game experience at Michigan, he has been improving his game through practice sessions. Added to that, 6-foot-3, 236-pounder Orji has expertise in both the run and pass, which makes him a valuable member of the offense. He began his career at Sachse High School in Texas, and his career-high score, combined with the scorers of his junior year, was when he secured 226 passes for 3467 yards and 38 touchdowns and also rushed for 2113 yards. In the 2023 season, he passed 15 times for 86 yards and one touchdown for the Wolverines. As the 2024 season approaches, Sherrone Moore is considering him for the starting quarterback position, given his past performances.

Next up, Sherrone Moore is showing his faith in Jack Tuttle, who is quite an experienced player, having played for Indiana and later transferred to Michigan. He could have gone to the NFL, but Tuttle decided to return for his seventh season. On top of that, last year, he was a backup for J. J. McCarthy, so he knows Michigan’s system and the quarterback position better than everyone else. Although he saw very little game time during the 2023 season, he secured 15 of 17 passes for 130 yards and one touchdown. Tuttle’s vast experience and understanding of the game make him best suited for the role, and Moore is expecting him to compete for the same spot with Orji and Davis Warren.

Davis Warren saw significant game time last season, but he could not complete a pass. However, Sherrone Moore and quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell said that Warren has improved his game during the spring game, and as a senior, he aims to secure the starting quarterback position. “J.J. set a standard that is really high, and he had a really really efficient and effective last year. All of us are trying to match that. That’s what I strive to do every day. That’s what I am chasing — J.J.” Warren said, showcasing his competitive nature. Till now, Coach Moore has not declared who’s going to be the ultimate choice, but he has showcased his faith in these three players. As the season is a few days away, it would be intriguing to watch any of them in the quarterback position. What are your thoughts on it? Any guess who’ll win the last shot?
