Home/College Football

Florida head coach Billy Napier has found his next co-defensive coordinator in the son of a former FSU coach. Sound familiar? From 2013 to 2014, Vinnie Sunseri’s father coached the defensive line under Jimbo Fisher at Florida State. Now, the younger Sunseri, recently hired as Florida’s co-DC and safety coach, seems to be following in his father’s footsteps. This 33-year-old former Jacksonville State DC replaces Austin Armstrong, who left the Gators for Houston in December. The big question now is: Can Vinnie handle the demands of this role in Florida?

Born in Pittsburgh on October 25, 1991, Vinnie Sunseri has been a sensation in the world of football as a coach and player. He started playing football at Marvin Ridge High School. However, due to personal reasons, he then transferred to Northridge High School in Tuscaloosa. Standing at 6 feet and 210 lbs, he played as a safety for the Alabama Crimson Tide under the GOAT coach, Nick Saban. Well, thanks to his stellar high school career that paved the way. And during his playing time with Tide, Sunseri played for two BCS National Title teams in 2011 and 2012.

This wasn’t the end of his football journey, though. He reached the pinnacle of his college career, getting drafted in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. Sunseri spent two seasons playing in the NFL, spending time with the 49ers and the Patriots. Then came the turning point, when Sunseri realized coaching could be the final destination of his career. And he did that.

Vinnie Sunseri shifted from playing to coaching when his playing career ended. And the most intriguing fact is that he rejoined Coach Saban at Bama as a graduate assistant in 2019. Sunseri seemed to be reliving his days on the field. In 2020, his coaching career brought him to the Patriots, where he started as a defensive assistant. Later, he worked under head coach Bill Belichick as the RBs coach from 2021 to 2023. And there, RB Rhamondre Stevenson’s 2022 running total of over 1,000 yards demonstrated Sunseri’s effectiveness as a coach.

This was only the beginning of Sunseri’s dominance. Then he joined Washington in 2024 as the safeties coach and worked with DC Steve Belichick, son of Bill Belichick. Sunseri’s defensive skills were on display as the Huskies finished fifth in the nation in passing yards allowed per game. And it became No. 1 in the Big 10 with 166.5 yards per game.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Vinnie Sunseri the right choice for Florida, or is his lack of experience a concern?

Have an interesting take?

With numerous colleges vying for his talents, this gifted young man, the son of a legendary coach with nearly 40 years of experience, chose to join the Gators in 2025. As the son of Sal Sunseri, a former All-American linebacker at Pitt and a highly respected coach in both college and the NFL, Vinnie Sunseri practically grew up immersed in the world of football.

Why did the Gators pick Vinnie Sunseri?

It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly why Napier took this action. Despite having little experience, Sunseri is being handed a significant role in a big program, just like the man he is replacing. In contrast to Sunseri, Armstrong had no Power Four coaching experience and was only hired after serving as DC for 2 years at Southern Miss.

Although he spent three of his four years coaching offensive players, he had only one year of position-coaching expertise at the collegiate level and had no experience coordinating defenses. There, his coaching skills develop under the tutelage of Belichick and Saban.

Ideally, the program would have brought in a coach with experience at a Power Five level, since Sunseri’s previous experience falls short of that. However, his defensive background with the Huskies and his proven track record of developing players are significant factors in his favor. However, there’s another factor as well. The link to Florida employees.

This move reunites Sunseri with several former Alabama staff, including Rob Sale and Russ Callaway, who now share the offensive coordinator role. Plus, there is Joe Houston, a colleague of Sunseri’s during their time with the Patriots. And not to forget, veteran Ron Roberts joined the Gators’ staff last January as the other co-coordinator. So Sunseri will be working with him and the executive HC of the defense for the Gators. Now, it’ll be interesting to see how the Gators perform in 2025 with this talented coaching crew, especially with Sunseri, a disciple of the legends, leading the defense.
