Home/College Football

Born in March 2001 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Courtney Allen Jackson, popularly known as Courtney Jackson, attended Gateway High School where his football journey started under head coach Don Holl. But Don Holl was not sure where to play him and that is why the Red Wolves wide receiver primarily played running back for most of his career. Then he met David Williams, a former wide receiver at Michigan State University, and his football career took a U-turn.

At Gateway High School, Williams was Jackson’s first specialized receiving coach, and Jackson shared a very deep connection with his coach as he helped him a lot in the transition from running back to wide receiver. However, unfortunately, only a few weeks away from the 2020s training camp, Jackson was in the middle of a less than six-hour drive back to Monroeville after he received the life-altering call from his father Derrick. Courtney lost his mother, Jori, in cardiac arrest who was 40. Let me tell you more about this fantastic woman.

Jackson was very close to his mother and even to date before going to any game, he prays remembering her. Alongside his father, Derrick, always sends some encouraging words to Jackson two hours before each game, ending the message with something Jori would always say. Jori was the person in Jackson’s life who loved him to play football. Moreover, this brave lady established the Jori Thoms-Jackson Education Institute for charity. In addition, she played a significant role in Jackson’s life and shaped his character. This mother-son connection was known to everyone, even his receiving coach.

Once William said, “It really drove him to work that much harder because he knows how much his mom loved watching him play football. And you saw it click, because he knew now I’m doing this for my mom and my family.” Hence, losing his mother was a tremendous loss for him, but the star athlete takes it as a spur to move forward. Let’s take a glimpse of Jackson’s stellar performance.

Courtney Jackson’s momentous achievements

With a 77-yard punt return touchdown in the second half, Jackson helped A-State overcome a 17-7 halftime deficit and defeat Tulsa 28-24. No A-State player has surpassed Jackson’s 77-yard punt return, the longest since Kevin Jones’ 89-yard touchdown return in 2007. Not to forget, A-State is off to its first 2-0 start since 2008. The most intriguing fact is that it was Jackson’s third career punt return for a touchdown with A-State and two in his last four games going back to 2023.
