The Hurricanes will face off against the Blue Devils this weekend, treating football fans with another spectacular showdown. However, since there is a difference in the momentum of the two teams, whether it will be a nail-biting power fight or a petty giveaway by the Blue Devils remains subject to question. Miami’s offense has been sitting atop of the Power Four teams in passing yards per game while Duke sits fifth among FBS defenses with 5.3 yards allowed per attempt. Miami is projected to clinch a win by 97 per cent, according to the computer analysis. While the figure sounds huge and hints toward a lopsided match, an intriguing commentary can make some differences.
Despite giving off a sluggish vibe, if you watch closely, there are a slew of things to watch out for. In the past week, Duke mounted 6 forced turnovers against SMU but couldn’t survive that game. It was an OT defeat, but the Hurricanes have enough gas left in their tank for the game to proceed to OT. After all, Miami has a 15-5 all-time edge over Duke. But the latest history depicts a contradiction. The Blue Devils obtained a win in the last match-up between the two programs, 45-21, in Mike Elko’s first year on the coaching crew. Saturday’s noon kickoff will answer all the hows and whats, and Joe Tessitore and Jesse Palmer will be live from Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, to keep us hot-blooded.

Not every story goes the distance. Some have rough endings while also giving birth to new stories. Well, Duke’s Manny Diaz had one such rough ending while coaching the Hurricanes. Diaz was let go by the program in December 2021. Who replaced him the same day? The current Miami head coach Mario Cristobal. It’s the first time that Diaz would be on opponents’ sidelines against Miami since that turn of events.

However, both the coaches are aware of this awkward storyline, and they made sure that the game doesn’t become about their matchup. They are keeping it a Duke vs. Miami thing. Speaking ahead of the game, Diaz said, “Certainly, when the schedule comes out, you’re aware of it. … I can’t predict what it’s going to be like on game day. But once the week shows up and you’re in such game-planning mode, you’re here to try to solve problems that they present. If that’s compartmentalizing, then guilty as charged.”
As per Manny Diaz, he has moved on and is at peace seeing that the program is in a good place. It’s the first time since Butch Davis that a Miami HC will coach their opponents. Let’s see how it works out for the Duke HC.
