Sterling Lockett committed to the Kansas State Wildcats in 2021. Unfortunately, he was not able to make much impact in his first two seasons. Because of his last name, the team and fans have high expectations from him. Although, because of a redshirt year in 2022 and his freshman season, he was mostly out of sight and games.

Sterling attended Blue Valley High School and started his football career with them. He not only developed his skills at his high school, but he also showed tremendous progress. Sterling is very fortunate and among the rare players who was born into a family with a rich football background. His dad, Kevin, is a former NFL player for the Kansas City Chiefs, Washington Redskins, Jacksonville Jaguars, and New York Jets. He is not recognized just as a player, but he is a legend who has given a lot of college football. During his time at K-State, he set multiple receiving records. His impressive skills and consistency in the field have helped him earn many awards and honors. He was the all-rounder of the university, good at both football and academics, and he earned All-American honors for both.

He was the first two-time All-American who became a second-round draft pick for the Kansas City Chiefs in the 1997 NFL Draft. In 1998, he caught 19 passes for 281 yards. His best season with K-State was 1999, where he recorded 34 receptions for 426 yards and two touchdowns. Again with his skills and agility, his best single-game performance came in the 9th week of the 2000 season. He totaled 77 yards, which included a first-half touchdown against Seattle.

Kevin has always mentioned his love for the university and his pride in being part of K-State’s football family. 247 reported his statement, which highlights his love for his former team: “A lot of people say they’re so thankful that our family has gone to K-State, and I always respond, ‘K-State has done just as much for our family as people think we have done for K-State.” He added, “Our family has been blessed beyond measure by Manhattan, Kansas.” The university has helped him establish a family legacy. The family’s connection began with Kevin and continued with his son Tyler, and now Sterling is giving his best at the university. Kevin’s sons have followed in their father’s footsteps to become standout wide receivers at K-State.
