So, let’s start with the Pops, Michael FreemanUS Air Force Vet (Respect), and in all honesty, he is a legend in the Freeman family and for the US. He grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and after high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He ended up stationed at Osan Air Base in South Korea during the 1970s, where he met his future wife, Chong. They got married in ’77, then moved to Texas in ’79. Michael’s career in the Air Force seriously shaped Marcus’s mindset. Growing up, Marcus watched his dad’s work ethic firsthand, which definitely helped shape how he approached football and life. Michael instilled that ‘do the work, no matter what’ mentality that’s been crucial to Marcus’s success. Moving from base to base also showed Marcus how to adapt and stay focused, no matter what curveballs life throws your way.

Where did Marcus Freeman grow up?

Marcus Freeman’s journey started in Ohio, born on January 10, 1986, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. With a dad in the Air Force and a mom from South Korea, his story’s already pretty unique. The family didn’t stick around the base for long, though. They eventually settled in Columbus, Ohio, where Marcus really started diving into football. It was there Marcus first made waves as a linebacker, and that eventually got him a scholarship to Ohio State University.

At Ohio State (2004-2008), Marcus went off. Straight like a rocket! He became a standout linebacker and played a key role in helping the Buckeyes win multiple Big Ten titles, including in 2005 and 2007. He also played in the 2006 National Championship game, where Ohio State fell short against Florida. His exceptional performance on the field earned him second-team All-Big Ten honors in 2008, solidifying his reputation as one of the top linebackers in the country.

So, Marcus Freeman didn’t get picked in the 2009 NFL Draft, but that didn’t slow him down. He signed with the Chicago Bears but got waived before the season even kicked off. He then briefly joined the Bills’ practice squad. Then had a stint with the Texans, but in 2010, health issues made him step away from football for good. At least for some time.

But instead of calling it quits, Marcus flipped the script and went into coaching. He started as a grad assistant at Ohio State, then worked his way up with stops at Kent State, Purdue, and Cincinnati, where he really made a name for himself as a defensive coach. By 2021, he was named head coach at Notre Dame, and he’s been killing it ever since.
