Is Jurrion Dickey's story the ultimate testament to a mother's love and support in sports?

They grow up so fast, don’t they? Can’t believe it’s almost two years since watching that viral Tik-Tok video of a hail-mary touchdown pass by the Menlo-Atherton high schooler Jurrion Dickey. The 247sports, 2023, No.2 rated wide receiver is a red-shirt freshman now at Oregon Ducks. Buckle up as there’s so much more coming up about Jurrion and his sweet little family. And obviously gridiron too!

On June 15, 2005, Jurrion was born in East Palo Alto, California. His high school tales are one to tell. From top individual rankings to averaging 79.3 yards per game and finishing his career with 140 receptions, 2,537 receiving yards, and 42 total touchdowns. The Ducks #13 sustained an injury that saw him miss the senior year with the Bears and was late for his own party as a star 2023 signing in Eugene. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Oregon wideout has only caught the ball once and carried it for 7 yards in the 2024 college football season against Michigan. But you bet he won hearts with his gesture in the video that ended up being even Kelly Clarkson’s favorite. In appreciation of his mom.

Deeply intertwined with the support of his parents, Shirri Brockett and Markel Moore, Jurrion is Raised by his mother Shirri, who stood by his side through the highs and lows. Jurrion is a prime example of talent nurtured by resilience and love. Giving mom her flowers, she played a pivotal role in his recovery after a devastating meniscus injury at age 14, an injury that could have ended his career before it truly began. But Shirri’s unwavering support became the foundation for his comeback. Clarkson made the right pair famous.

In 2022, Jurrion and his mom appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show where they shared their incredible story, detailing the viral moment after Jurrion caught a game-winning touchdown and ran straight to his mother in the stands. Shirri tearfully recalled, “I call him my miracle child,” especially after learning about his abnormal meniscus that led to the career-threatening injury. “It had broken him,” she explained. The doctors even said he couldn’t play football anymore. As they wrote such an amazing story, Pilot Pen awarded Dickey and his mother $1,000 to keep writing more!

It wasn’t just his mom on his side, his coaches and his teammates were with him, too. That’s what you call a team. The California native said that the new coaching staff at Oregon, led by Head Coach Dan Lanning and Wide Receivers Coach Junior Adams, made him a priority.

The Kelly Clarkson Show’s appearance became a moment of national recognition for Jurrion and Shirri. During the ‘What I’m Liking’ segment, everyone fell in love first with his cool TD catch, and second, where instead of celebrating with the guys, he ran off the field to hug his mom. Even Clarkson couldn’t help but choke up, commenting, “Every time I cry. It’s like, ‘Where is he going?’ He went straight to his mom. It was the sweetest thing ever.” Look Mom I’m on TV! has a whole new feeling when your mom is there too.

After receiving 21 college scholarship offers, with Oregon being his ultimate choice. “I just pray that he fulfills his dream to be able to play in the NFL,” Shirri said, capturing the hope that fuels every practice and every play for the Ducks red-shirt freshman. As he’s still taking things slowly after the surgery, Jurrion Dickey sure has a lot of potential.
