Garret Rangel's parents are his biggest fans—how crucial is family support in an athlete's success?

‘He’s not playing football, he’s thinking about it.’  This is how parents Jerry Rangel and Christy Rangel deem their son, the exceptional QB of Oklahoma State, Garret Rangel’s sports approach. One of the most weighted red-shirt sophomores of 2024 has come a long way from being the highest-ranked Latino high school prospect belonging to the state of Texas. While the Cowboys are currently facing a dip with consecutive losses at the season start, Rangel got some extra responsibility to carry the offensive ladder forward in the absence of Spencer Sanders’.

Rangel did a decent job against Kansas with 27-of-40 passing for 304 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. But the expectation bar is higher, and he is getting there slowly but surely. After all, it’s his parents who owed him a career worth this much believe.

The 6-foot-2, 181-pound quarterback started to immerse himself in recreational soccer when he was just 3. Thanks to his father, Jerry Rangel, who instilled a priceless philosophy in the toddler’s veins that says, preparation equals success. Gerald, who had a proud military affiliation as a former infantry soldier in the Army’s famed 82nd Airborne Division, put some of his ideals on a piece of paper and kept it in a binder. Little Rangel grew up finding and assimilating the million-dollar life lessons from his binder. Since fourth grade, the epic guidance of his real-life superhero propelled him to embrace the path of discipline, self-evaluation, and hard work, eventually leading to a flamboyant career.

He transferred to Oklahoma State’s signing class as a rare asset and there’s no looking back. However, the unconditional parental and familial support is still there, and he can easily reach out to their hands whenever he looks back.

What is Christy Rangel’s role in Garret’s character development?

Coming to Rangel’s mother Christy Rangel, the lady taught him about a quintessential family esteem that sounds, ‘We have a heart of a lion.‘ No matter how unfathomable it might sound, the child could pick up the sense of pride and honor attached to this even at this tender age and somehow start to live up to the standard. Christy injected another high-value principle into the child that stopped him from winning at anything he didn’t earn. Not only hypothetically, momma Christy had also been the real-life companion in his son’s Monopoly, ping with shots off spin moves and the other board games, and helped him turn out a highly competitive individual unless and until he turned 6 ft 2 monster and very able to topple his mom.

Moving ahead, the theory of discipline and character the Oklahoma QB inherited from his paternal grandfather, retired Sgt. Major Ponciano who was an outright self-made man. Looks like the Oklahoma QB picked up a few warrior spirits from his family, after all. Not only that, they poured a ton of empathy into him, which was on clear display when the Rangel saw their child rush to a friend and put his arm over his shoulder to help him regain his confidence in the middle of a game.
