Is Dominic Lovett the best wide receiver to come out of his high school? Let's hear your thoughts!

The Georgia Bulldogs have a star-studded roster. The No. 1 ranked team in AP’s Top 25 rankings has proven winners on both offense and defense. Under the stewardship of Kirby Smart, the team went undefeated in 2023 and is looking to continue the same in 2024. In such a team, it is easy to get lost as a number on a shirt. Fans adore, remember and worship stars. More than anything else, what they love the most is a talent who may have what it takes to shine when the lights are brightest. Dominic Lovett is one of those talents. After transferring to the Bulldogs from Missouri in 2022, Lovett has already won over the fans. However, not much is known about his high school. Which high school did Dominic Lovett go to?

Dominic Lovett attended East St. Louis Senior High School in his hometown of Louis, Illinois. The school is limited to grades 9 to 12. Over the years, the school has found mentions in various books. Jonathan Kozol’s Savage Inequalities, a book about educational inequalities among schools of various races and economic classes, discussed East St. Louis Senior High School.

Lovett’s high school has an extensive list of famous alumni. Many MLB stars like Hank Bauer, Ed Blake and Don Choate attended East St. Louis Senior High School. The list also includes NFL athletes like Bryan Cox, Tom Bayless and Al Dixon. Al Joyner is among the most accomplished names on the alumni list. He famously won the gold medal in the 1984 LA Olympics. 

Louis, as per the school’s football coach, is a city “where people care about its rich traditions.” These traditions and subsequent pride associated with them are reflected in the accomplishments of East St. Louis Senior High School. Apart from being the school with the most wins in the US, it has also won 10 state championships over the years, with the last win coming in the 2022-23 season. In 2023-24, the team finished with a record of 11-3 and fell to Cary Grove High School in the Class 6A state championship final. However, In Dominic Lovett’s senior year (2019-20), East St. Louis (Sr.) finished the season with a 14-0 record. The school went on to claim the state championship honor by defeating Crystal Lake in the final.

Dominic Lovett’s prolific performance in the field did not impact his performance in the classroom. During his senior high school, Lovett not only won the state championship. He was among the students who made it to the honor roll of his school. 

While not much is known about Dominic Lovett’s GPA during his high school years, he happily posted on X about his academic performance in his first semester at the University of Missouri. “3.5 GPA in my first semester of college 🎯🥇,” a tweet by Dominic Lovett read.

A deep dive into Dominic Lovett’s high school years 

During his high school years, Darren Sunkett coached Dominic Lovett. Sunkett is among the greatest high school coaches. Such are the accomplishments that Sunkett received congratulatory messages from none other than the GOAT himself, Nick Saban, when he registered his 200th victory as a coach in October 2022. With Sunkett at the helm, East St. Louis (Sr.) has won four state championships. At East St. Louis (Sr.), Dominic Lovett was not just a wide receiver. Coach Sunkett also utilized Lovett as a running back for the rush game. After excelling in his first few years at Belleville West, Lovett took off during his senior high school at East St. Louis (Sr,). He finished the 2019-20 season with 1,549 yards (on 17 receptions). While doing so, he also made 17 touchdowns. His performances attracted several big programs for college, and after deliberating over multiple options, he chose to attend the University of Missouri.

Starting as a backup at Missouri in his freshman year, Lovett finished the season with 173 years on 26 catches. He also recorded 40 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. He gained prominence during his sophomore year at Missouri. After starting the season as a wide receiver, Lovett did not look back. His 173 yards in the previous season increased to 846 yards (an average of 15.1 yards/catch) on 56 catches. The performance earned him a spot in AP’s first-team All-Southeastern Conference. At the end of the 2022 season, Dominic Lovett transferred to Georgia. At Bulldogs, Lovett’s impressive numbers continued in 2023. He recorded 365 receiving years on 35 catches.
