We are talking about one of the two FBS quarterbacks who recorded 2000 yards and rushed for 1000 during the 2023 season, Thomas Castellanos. He stands at 5-foot-9 and weighs around 196 pounds but plays like a tornado on the field.

After his winning performance last season, he made waves in college football. He faced a rough patch growing up, living with ten siblings and a single mother.

How was Thomas Castellanos’ early life?

Castellanos was born in Miami and grew up among his ten siblings. When he was only three years old, his father passed away. However, more information about his late father’s occupation or the reason for his death is unknown. After his father’s demise, he moved to South Georgia, where his mother used to work as a nurse.

Castellanos’ mom worked day and night to provide everything her children needed. Despite facing emotional and financial crises, she ensured her children never skipped a meal. “I’m very thankful for her,” Castellanos said about his mother.

“She’s the reason I am who I am today,” he added, looking at his mother’s hard work and strength, providing him the fuel to move forward.

Since a young age, Castellanos started showing interest in football, and his brother Jones was his mentor who supported him in his love for football. His life took a steep turn when his brother passed away. Castellanos stated, “He was like the head of the snake. It’s almost like the head getting chopped off when he passed away.”

Castellanos said after his brother Jones left them. He even contemplated quitting football, but soon remembered his brother’s motivation. He recalled his 2 am phone conversation with him and how Jones would always show faith in his journey. For a short time, Jones was a quarterback for Garden City Community College in Kansas.

In his darkest times, his faith in God survived him as he would visit the church and find his true self. After losing his father and brother, he realized that life was too fragile. Difficult circumstances strengthened him to face life, and he focused on his game. That’s the reason he has always been on the minds of recruiters since he was in high school.

The glittering football career of Castellanos

He started his journey at Ware County High School in Georgia, where he was a standout player. In his junior year, Thomas Castellanos led his team to a 10-2 score and threw for 2800 yards along with doing 23 touchdowns. Added to that, he rushed for 939 yards and 24 rushing touchdowns. He got offers from well-known colleges such as Georgia, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Kansas, FAU, and Coastal Carolina, given his solid performances.

In 2022, Castellanos committed to USF and during his first year at the college, he played only five games. He transferred to Boston College in April 2023. During his debut season at Boston, he made records like completing 2146 yards with 15 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
