Well, when Edwards Stadium was constructed in 1964, it could hold 45,000 spectators. In response to growing demand for seats, BYU undertook yet another makeover in 1982, raising the field eight feet, eliminating the surrounding track, and erecting stands in the north and south end zones; the stadium could accommodate more than 65,000 people. Thanks to its enlargement. But after the athletic department installed additional seats for corporate sponsors on the east and west sidelines, seats declined and today, LaVell Edwards Stadium can hold 62,073 people. Now, you might be wondering why this name was chosen.

Okay, originally known as Cougar Stadium, the stadium could accommodate 5,000 spectators when it debuted sixty years ago. Then, LaVell Edwards took over as BYU’s head coach after 29 years as the team’s assistant coach for 10 years. At the conclusion of the 2000 season, the stadium was formally renamed in his honor before to his last home game as head coach. But the trip wasn’t as easy as a screenplay for a movie. Since its expansion in 1982, the stadium’s attendance statistics have consistently ranked it among the top 25 in the nation. At the time, the 64,253 people for BYU’s September 25, 1982, debut game in the expanded stadium were described as “the largest gathering ever in Utah history.” Recently, a sizable crowd was present at the stadium on Saturday, September 29, 2024, when BYU played Kansas State.
