The broadcasting days are officially over for Dan Mullen. After receiving an ultimatum from Florida after an underwhelming college football regular season in 2021, the veteran coach switched his genre and turned the tides in the commentary box over the past three seasons. Now, he is seemingly gaining back his confidence to go back to the mainstream again, and the UNLV Rebels strike the iron at the perfect time. But how will it change his financial stand? What was the money deal all about?

Well, for all those curious about how and when UNLV signed the former coaching legend after Barry Odom left the building on December 8th, it’s pertinent to note that the deal is finalized but not signed yet. It would be a five-year agreement with financial details yet to be disclosed. However, his Florida buyout was lucrative. Following his dismissal from the program after a 24-23 overtime loss to Missouri, the Gators had to pay him a whopping$12 million to nullify his contract.

His merged income from coaching and ESPN broadcasting work made the figure around $13 million as the current net worth. No doubt, UNLV offered him a lump sum of money to lure him into the program, and it will hopefully boost his pocket a lot more than before.

The turnaround is quite something for 52-year-old Mullen whose coaching journey includes the like Syracuse, Notre Dame, Utah, Bowling Green, and Mississippi State. He joined the Gators in 2017 and had a record of 34-15 in his four years at the program. That isn’t all. The Gators’ period also includes an appearance in the SEC championship game. However, it won’t be wrong to say that his coaching fundamentals were developed at Mississippi State, where he spent nine long years. Overall, in 13 seasons coaching at Gators and Mississippi State, Mullen’s overall record stands at 103-61. But, his UNLV decision came after a massive contradiction.

Dan Mullen’s surprising decision days after a different admission to Pat McAfee

This college football season fell heavily on the coaches, to say the least. From Billy Napier to Kalen DeBoer or Ryan Day, most of the prolific HCs have been in severe trouble to save their job till the end of the season. But UNLV had to make their call as Barry Odom purposely left his chair for a better opportunity in Purdue.

It propelled the regents to search for an immediate name to fill the void. But having Dan Mullen into the picture was a bit too farfetched even a few days back. The former ESPN mogul seemed to be on a completely different page while sitting with the Pat McAfee show.

Humans changing their minds can be a pretty predicative plot. But the timeline matters the most. The 52-year-old CFB legend Mullen is still in a good place to ace the coaching job. While he has not been in touch with mentoring the kids for a while, let’s just not forget, he had 10 winning seasons in 13 years as an SEC coach. Isn’t it enough to lure any top-tier program around the globe? Yes, it is. But it begged the question, does the man himself want it at all?

Well, at this point in time, this question makes zero sense, but it was relevant till a few hours ago and Mullen had a relevant answer for that as well.

”Are you trying to get me out of TV? I love this TV, and I like it here on TV. We’re talking, having a good time, having fun,” the current Rebels coach said to McAfee during a candid chat.

While we’re still in the dark about the reason, he changed his mind in a couple of days, we hope, regardless of all the doubts and debates, Dan will make it count with the Rebels.
