Is Quinn Ewers' risky play style a sign of brilliance or recklessness? What do you think?

With great power comes great responsibility. Back when Nick Saban had mentioned that the Longhorns were built like an “SEC team”, it was possible because of the star lineup of players on their roster. Leading the charge would be the kid with a mullet who knows how to make plays, Quinn Ewers. However, just being good doesn’t mean you should be allowed to risk it all. As the Longhorns lead the charge with 31-0 on the board against the Rams, Ewers decided to make a high-risk play for his team.

Ewers managed to slip in a hospital ball pass to Isiah Bond. Now Travis Reier, an account on X, brings us the news on September 1st. Now why are we calling this a high-risk play? Well, a hospital ball pass is something that’s done with very little accuracy and timing. This massively increases the chances of getting injured. The guy who is at risk of getting hurt is the receiver because of the heavy contact. HC Steve Sarkisian had had a lot of pressure on him. Back on July 18th, Harry Douglas had explained that Sarkisian will have a lot of expectations pitted against him during this season. “The expectation for him is to have the ability to win a National Championship,” Harry had noted. This was more so because Sarkisian has the roster to achieve this feat. The team has got major kids like DJ Campbell, Ewers, and Bond starting in the offense. This makes the entire depth chart quite strong as compared to their opponents on the schedule. So, it ain’t no wonder that Ewers took the shot with the pass to Bond. The kid knows that they have to make it big.

Ewers have already managed to lock in 3 TDs as the game against the Rams reached half-time. Not only that, Ewers has also clocked in 18-25 for 248 yards. Alongside him, Bond has managed to squeeze in a 1 TD and around 61 yards. The hospital ball pass from Ewers was a 7-yard TD for Bond. With what the team has managed to accomplish during its season opener, it ain’t no wonder why Nick Saban had high hopes for Sarkisian and the Longhorns. However, while the Rams game was easy enough, the true test will come as the Longhorns take the turf against last season’s winners, the Wolverines. So can Sarkisian and his star roster pull through?

Longhorns vs the Wolverines

The 2023 Wolverines roster under Jim Harbaugh was probably one of the strongest teams in CFB. Built around QB JJ McCarthy, the team had an undefeated run and won the cup despite their coach not being present because of his 3-day game ban. However, now, Sherrone Moore takes the reins and aims to recreate the same magic. We find Michigan somewhat of a mess. With the ongoing NCAA violation drama and Moore losing the recruitment battle this year, the team is in a dire sport. Moore still has not managed to pick who his starting QB would be. The needle keeps spinning between Alex Orji and David Warren. Regardless of who he picks, both kids, while they do have the experience of playing with McCarthy, do not possess the same talent.

On the other hand, Sarkisian is pretty much set with Ewers leading the charge. We already saw the risks the kid can talk about during the match against the Rams, so it’s pretty much proven that he won’t leave any stone unturned. However, we are yet to see what the Wolverines manage to achieve against Fresno State during their season opener. That match would give us much-needed insight into how the team is going to perform under Moore in the future. For now, what the Longhorns have managed to pull in their opener proves that they are coming for the crown.
