What’s cooking in Dallas? Cowboys owner Jerry Jones just dropped a rumor mixtape that’s got everyone talking. The hottest track? Deion Sanders as head coach, with bonus cut features like Warren Sapp adding to the hype. Even Nick Saban is jumping in with his stamp of approval. Could the Cowboys be on the brink of the most headline-grabbing coaching hire ever?
Well, while there’s no official update on that yet, it’s no surprise that the industry is absolutely rooting for Sanders. Case in point? When the Colorado Buffaloes coach’s name popped up again and again during a conversation between insiders Suzy Shuster, Amy Trask and Rich Eisen on ‘The Rich Eisen Show’.
On the episode aired on January 21, Shuster asked, “What the hell’s going to happen in Dallas? We are approaching hot mess territory really fast.”

The team’s search for a new head coach has hit center stage, and Deion Sanders is stealing the spotlight. After Mike McCarthy got the boot, the Cowboys owner reportedly had a chat with Sanders, igniting a firestorm of speculation. Eisen said, “I loved it when I heard that Deion…he called him…I just think that makes such perfect sense…this is the perfect way for Jerry to bring all the attention to Dallas, to bring back one of his chosen people. He loves Deion, he loves the attention, he loves what it would mean…[Stephen A Smith] said that Jerry would not want to share the spotlight with a coach like that. And I couldn’t have disagreed more…because I think it makes perfect sense to bring in Deion Sanders…Once Deion comes, others will follow. It seems to me, like, right now, no one is the Pied Piper of football more than Deion Sanders. Does that then open the doors for…Will we see [Warren Sapp] come with him?”
Imagine this—Deion calling the shots, Sapp coaching up the D-line. That’s not just a team; that’s a Netflix doc waiting to happen. Saban made it clear: “I want him to get that job.” The Alabama boss isn’t just hyping Deion for fun; he’s speaking from respect.
Let’s talk about Sapp for real quick, the Hall of Fame D-lineman who’s already working as a graduate assistant under Sanders in Boulder. “These young men adore [Warren Sapp],” Sanders said during his docuseries. And why wouldn’t they? The man’s got a gold jacket, a Super Bowl ring, and a swagger that commands respect.
If Deion makes the jump to Dallas (big if; let’s not get ahead of ourselves), Sapp would likely tag along. His defensive expertise and fiery personality could be the spark Dallas needs to revitalize their defense. Plus, Sapp’s energy is contagious. Cowboys fans might need to buckle up because things could get loud—on and off the field.
Deion, a former Cowboys superstar and Super Bowl champ has taken college football by storm at Colorado. But Jerry loves a crazy spectacle, and bringing Prime to Big D would be the ultimate flex. However, it’s not all rainbows and sunshine, which Eisen further pointed out: “From [Jerry Jones’] reputation in this league…is he doesn’t pay coaches…and Deion would command a salary of a certain standard to leave Colorado and to leave what he is building there. And to leave it just two years in and to leave the comfort of being a coach in the Big 12 where you have a path to the college football playoffs…to leave that, he would have to bring his staff. He would have to have the people that he wants to bring. Does Jerry want to cough up the coin for that? You have to really sit here and think about that cuz he doesn’t do that normally.”
Only if this was the sole hurdle…
Trask brought up a very valid point surrounding Sanders’ NFL future, and asked, “I have a question for you both. Deion has stated he wants to coach his son or sons in the NFL. Well, Dallas already has a quarterback under contract. Is that going to impact the decision Deion makes?”
Rich Eisen: “I think Deion loves where he is. Again, I haven’t spoken to him off camera…having known him and I see what he has built. And I see what he posts, and I see how he goes about his business.”
“He is building something there for him to just tap out of it to go to Dallas without the people that he would want to bring. I think what Deion said the other day is that he wants to coach his sons…Potentially having worked with him for as much as I did, I took that to mean, ‘Hey, everybody you’re all talking about Shedeur, which is great. I got Shilo coming out too, and this guy is draftable in the same way and he should don’t forget about Shilo either’. Deion knows the way this works that if he goes to Dallas, Dak [Prescott’s] making 60 million. That’s going to be his quarterback. Period. And plus, they’re too far down in the draft to go trade up, to go get him, which is why everybody was mentioning Vegas for him, even though he and Antonio Pierce are represented by the same people.”
“So I don’t know what’s real and what’s not. Because, again, I’m staying away from calling him and texting him or this sort of thing…but as of this recording, the Cowboys are speaking to their offensive coordinator and Brian Schottenheimer who checks a couple of boxes for the Cowboys. One, it’s continuity, which is why Dak wanted with Mike McCarthy to stay. So Brian can do this…He has been a coach in this league for a very long time, although he’s never been an HC. So he doesn’t check the HC box. We all know who his dad was and how he’s been a football lifer, but he also checks the box of being less expensive.”

Interestingly, The Rich Eisen show folks aren’t the only ones sharing their admiration publicly for the one and only ‘Coach Prime’…
Nick Saban’s bold approval of Deion Sanders
Just when you thought the Cowboys saga couldn’t get spicier, Nick Saban entered the chat. On The Pivot podcast, Saban made it clear: “I want him to get that job…I have a tremendous amount of respect for Deion Sanders. First, he’s a great person, and he’s done a great job of marketing the program to create a lot of national interest.” Saban said. And you know what? He’s not wrong.
Sanders turned Jackson State into a powerhouse and has already made waves at Colorado. Saban knows championship pedigree, and he sees it in Deion. But here’s the twist: Saban also praised the potential for Sanders to bring a winning culture to Dallas. Combine that with Jerry Jones’ penchant for drama, and this could be a low-key match made in football heaven—or chaos central.
Jerry Jones isn’t afraid of making waves, but hiring Deion would be his biggest bet yet. Let’s be real—Dallas doesn’t just need a coach; they need a culture shift. People in that locker room would literally follow Sanders to hell. And with Sapp in the mix, the locker room dynamic would be unlike anything we’ve seen before. Look, Deion Sanders made it pretty clear that the NFL gig is not on his wishlist unless coaching his sons.
