USC vs. LSU outdrawing the Super Bowl—Is college football officially America's favorite sport now?

What did fans want to see at this season’s USC vs LSU season opener at Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas? Perhaps, it’s the fact that they’re a rare game who are meeting each other for the first time since 1984? Or, maybe people are curious about how each team will fare without Heisman winners Caleb Williams (2022) and Jayden Daniels(2023)?

Whatever the reason is, it drew in a huge crowd of fans which even surpassed the Super Bowl LIV between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers. Earlier this year at the Super Bowl, the same venue garnered 61,629 fans. So when a college football season opener beat an SB game in attendance, it’s truly a legendary feat.

Starting with two new QBs this season in USC Miller Moss and LSU Garrett Nussmeier, these two top conference programs have a huge fan base and Sunday night showed that! According to an X post on September 2, “Attendance at USC vs LSU game, 63,969,” breaking the previous record when Patrick Mahomes won his second Super Bowl ring.

Moss, who just played his first season as the team’s QB after waiting for three years, displayed an emotional reaction to the win. He said, “I’m really happy for our team. The identity that we are trying to create really came through tonight. I couldn’t be more proud of the guys.” The Trojans can now proudly step into the new Big Ten Conference as the bearer of the first blood. Their next game will take place on September 7 against Utah State Aggies who are the first in the Mountain West with a fresh win against the Robert Morris Colonials.
