Well, after last season’s 8-5 snub, Sherrone Moore refuses to take his foot off the gas. And the result? Michigan’s 2025 class sits at No. 3 in the Big Ten with 24 commits. That’s a massive win. But despite that, he’s already hunting for 2026 gems. His latest move? A push for a 6’3”, 185-pound four-star wide receiver drowning in 35 offers. Now, there’s a catch, as Penn State and James Franklin are trying really hard to lure him. But Moore’s back with his master stroke, pulling family ties. So, is it a done deal? Not yet, but if history repeats itself, then Franklin might leave empty-handed.
But who’s this 185-pound standout? That would be Oscar Smith’s Travis Johnson, a top pass catcher in the nation. He’s not just good; he’s ranked No. 23 among receivers and No. 167 overall in the country, as per 247Sports. With 35 teams showing interest, the competition between Sherrone Moore and James Franklin is heating up. Adding to the intrigue is Johnson’s mother, Ms.Tiffany Johnson, who recently hinted at Michigan being impressive.
Yes, that’s correct. EJ Holland, a Michigan insider, recently posted about Travis and Tiffany’s visit on X, including a photo with Moore. Holland emphasized their excitement, quoting, “@MrsJohnsonJbd, mother of On300 WR Travis Johnson, had amazing things to say about their visit to Michigan #GoBlue.” Holland also shared a statement from Travis, who couldn’t have sounded more locked in: “Every time we go back, it just feels more and more like home.” Additionally, Travis’ mom praised Michigan, stating: “Everything my son needs to be successful as a student-athlete, they have.”

If you think that’s a big blow for Penn State, then wait for what’s coming next. After Holland’s tweet, Tiffany reiterated her support by hopping on X to thank him for accurately depicting their perspective: “As always @EJHollandOn3 thank you so much for your time & the opportunity to share @TravisJohnson4_‘s journey & my perspective.” This was not the message James Franklin or Penn State wanted to receive.
Look, Travis has made five visits to Penn State so far, and he has another one scheduled for June. On paper, Penn State is still a contender, holding the 4th spot in the Big Ten with nine commits, 67% of them being blue chips. This strong foundation gives Travis every reason to continue considering them.
However, Michigan is also in the picture. Travis has visited Michigan four times, twice in 2025 alone, and has another trip planned for June. With recent developments, Penn State’s chances are not just declining but rapidly falling.

Travis Johnson’s strong ties with Sherrone Moore’s Michigan
Michigan has almost completed its 2025 class and is now focusing on the 2026 recruits. The Wolverines have already made significant signings, including four-star quarterback Brady Hart and three-star cornerback Brody Jennings. They are also pursuing three-star prospect Jaylen Pile alongside Travis Johnson. Currently, Michigan holds the 10th spot in the Big Ten for 2026 with three commitments, placing them 37th nationally. If Johnson commits, he will greatly enhance their team.
Well, Johnson’s initial visit to Michigan was during the September Texas game. Despite the Wolverines’ loss, the coaching staff’s constant support resonated with him. “They lost the game, and still after, I was out at dinner with Coach Bellamy. He’s a great dude. So is Coach Moore. He’s a great, genuine guy.” Plus, let’s not forget that Sherrone Moore’s Larry Ellison spent $10.5 million for Bryce Underwood’s commitment.
But here’s the catch. Travis Johnson has strong family ties to West Virginia. His dad played there, and his brother currently does play there. We all know how family ties play an important role in changing players’ decisions. Remember Dylan Raiola, who left teams like Georgia for Nebraska just to take forward his father’s legacy. “I’m always going to keep West Virginia in my pocket,” Johnson said. “I would love to play with him again.” But Virginia Tech also looms, with head coach Brent Pry and receivers coach Fontel Mines maintaining strong ties.

Now, what makes his decision more interesting is that distance and home state aren’t big factors for Travis Johnson, as he is more focused on what’s best for him than finding a home state college.“My mom is probably always going to come with me,” Johnson said. “Even if she doesn’t, she’s going to visit every week.” Instead, his priorities focus on a winning program, development, and a strong relationship with the head coach and position coach. With all the visits lined up, let’s wait and see if Michigan can finally lure away this player or not!
