Is Quinn Ewers the real deal, or just another overhyped college QB struggling under pressure?

Before the 2024 season started, Quinn Ewers was one of the top players in college football. Fans and football experts were betting on him to win the Heisman Trophy. ESPN predicted that Ewers would be a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft. But did he live up to their expectations? Despite the injury during the season, Ewers was named a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award, which recognizes the nation’s top college player in Week 11. He was also selected as a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Award, which is awarded to the best quarterback in the country. However, despite some good performances, Geoff Ketchum, owner of Orange Bloods, has something to say about how the season has gone for Sarkisian’s QB1.

“In fact, if you merge his last 20 quarters together, he’s got a 161.3. Quarterback rating. That would be a career-high and one of the best seasons that any Texas quarterback has ever had. It speaks to how many great seasons Texas quarterbacks have had, historically. But I think it also says it’s not all that bad. So here’s the point that I would make. Quinn’s peaks are up there.  His lows. He’s just got real peaks and valleys.”

Ewers has had his good and bad days so far. If we discuss his recent performance against Arkansas, he completed 20 out of 32 passes for 176 yards and scored two touchdowns. And it wasn’t the first time he struggled with his pocket presence. Was he under pressure? It looks like so, and it was quite evident throughout the game.

Ewers suffered an oblique injury against UTSA during their Week 3 matchup, which unfortunately kept him away from the game for a few weeks. Steve Sarkisian had to go with Arch Manning. Arch, on his part, handled everything together as well as a QB2 could. Some amazing moments and some iffy quarters. Yes, there was genuine hype around Manning, but it wasn’t like the Longhorns were playing any playoff contenders.

The biggest dip, or the valley that Ketchum talks about, came for Ewers in a crucial SEC clash against the Georgia Bulldogs. Sarkisian, for obvious reasons, started the Week 8 game with Ewers, and the home team was trailing 0-23 at halftime. Ewers looked like he forgot to play the position. He couldn’t read the defense, make or extend plays, and handed a struggling Bulldogs’ offense some short-field situations that could capitalized on. How dire did it get? Well, Sarkisian replaced Ewers with Manning so that the former could get his head right. The change also didn’t work, and Ewers later returned to the game.

Have an interesting take?

That game was a reflection of the lows for Quin Ewers. We all understand his brilliance when he’s at it. However, when he’s not, the Longhorns do not look like a real national championship contender. It doesn’t help Steve Sarkisian that he is being attacked by the strength-of-schedule fanatics, who argue that Texas hasn’t really won against any good team. Their only good win (if we stretch it) is against Vanderbilt. The other good team they faced was the Bulldogs. Well, that didn’t go well.

Is Quinn Ewers entering the NFL Draft?

Is Quinn Ewers going to stay with Texas for the next season? He started the season as a strong prospect, but things did not go as per his plans. But his injury could not stop him from performing for long. His performance against Oklahoma has set the tone, and he is trying to be on track.

On Thursday, Chip Brown from Horns247 reported that he is “expected” to make declarations. “I spoke to two sources close to Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers on Wednesday night who said they expect Ewers to enter the 2025 NFL Draft after this season,” Brown wrote.

During Texas’ first loss this season against the Bulldogs, he let many fans down, and people criticized him, but he has not let the noise disturb him. The Longhorns are currently ranked No. 3 and can secure a spot in the SEC championship game if they win their remaining two games. The game against Texas A&M is something that the whole SEC will watch as it has the potential to flip the table. A Longhorns loss will be celebrated across many Southern states. All eyes will be on Quinn Ewers as well. Perform from here on, and he will be a pro next year.
