Did UNLV expose Fresno State's weaknesses, or was it just a fluke win?

The 2024 season of college football has entered its fifth week, and games are getting more intense. On Wednesday, the NCAA got to witness its latest off-filed drama. UNLV’s starting quarterback made the big announcement and declared he won’t be playing the rest of the season because of the unmet promises.

UNLV made a commitment to Matthew Sluka that they would pay him $100,000 to join them, but they paid him a mere $3000. As soon as the news was out in the media, people started calling the quarterback a quitter. UNLV Rebels have won all three games so far this season. Today, they are playing against Fresno State, and guess what? Without Matthew Sluka, the Rebels are still dominating and were leading with an impressive margin of 31 points till the third quarter.

Brett McMurphy, America’s College Football Insider who works with ActionNetworkHQ, just shared stats, which clearly state that UNLV emerged winner in their controversy, as he shared some embarrassing stats.

Rebels are looking very strong this season; they have won all three games with impressive margins. Although today’s game is very crucial as they have a point to make, commenting on the same Brett tweeted, “The Matthew Sluka-less UNLV Rebels are leading Fresno State 28-0 with 13 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Rebels had not scored more than 27 points in a game vs. FBS teams this year with Sluka.”

Many people questioned not only Matthew Sluka but also the UNLV Rebels for failing to seal the deal with the quarterback. Most of them feel that NIL has ruined college sports. Now, their star QB-less offense is performing under pressure, but it doesn’t seem like it because their numbers in today’s game tell a different story.

UNLV Rebels are dominating Fresno State

Tim Skipper’s team finally got on the board in the third quarter, but it didn’t make much of a difference. Hajj Williams and Ricky White quickly responded with a touchdown, keeping Fresno State from celebrating. The Rebels had been in control from the start. Malik Sherrod scored a short touchdown when the score was already 31-0 in the third quarter.

Did UNLV expose Fresno State's weaknesses, or was it just a fluke win?

Have an interesting take?

Williams and White have been in sync all game, racking up 111 yards and two touchdowns between them. Williams has been especially sharp, completing 13 out of 16 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. On top of that, he added 99 rushing yards and another touchdown. Barry Odom must be proud to see his team perform like this. By the end of the game, without Sluka on the field, UNLV dominated Fresno State 59-14, improving to an undefeated 4-0 record.
