Let’s dig into some old hoopla, folks! We are talking about Nebraska Cornhuskers football. Three years back, the former Huskers HC Scott Frost landed in hot waters. He lost confidence in the program after the Huskers dropped to 1-2 in 2022. Back then, he got fired by Huskers Director of Athletics Trev Alberts, who took a shot at Scott. Three years have passed, and the fans thought that the coaches might have moved on. Scott has taken up a new role in the UCF Knights. But did not forget to take a thinly veiled shot at the former AD.

Well, Alberts and Scott went different ways. Scott’s now the Knights’ head coach, while Alberts is the Texas A&M AD. But it seems Scott hasn’t forgotten that snub from Alberts back when he was the Huskers’ AD.

With Scott now rehired to replace Gus Malzahn, he’s got more than enough to handle. Well, the transfer portal has been pretty hectic. As Scott shared, “My life was 6 in the morning ’til midnight, falling asleep with my phone in my hand for five weeks just trying to get a team put together.” In a recent press conference, the HC started by talking about his plan of action. But it looks like he carries with himself the burden of the past snub from Alberts. Did he use any foul words for the former Nebraska AD?

No. Did he verbally attack Alberts? Nope. Rather, Scott took a subtle shot. Can you imagine the Knights HC took the path of praise? But true college football fans can decode what lies underneath the good words. On the HuskerOnline podcast, analyst Sean Callahan read out Scott’s speech. It read,  “Terry’s been great. I’m so grateful to have an AD that’s on my side and working alongside me when you’re in the other situation.”

The analyst continued, “It’s really difficult and it’s really debilitating to be honest with you when you feel like you’re working and you don’t have somebody right there alongside you. Terry and I are on the same page. He’s trying to give us everything that he can to be successful; it’s a good partnership. I’m grateful to him.” Well, someone’s singing AD Terry Mohajir’s praises at UCF, but it’s hard to forget that things didn’t start so smoothly for Frost with the last guy in charge at Nebraska.

Alberts refused to give Scott a chance after Nebraska’s 45-42 loss to Georgia Southern at Memorial Stadium back in September 2022. Now, you need to be reminded about the former AD’s take on Scott to uncover the real meaning of the Knights HC’s speech.

Is Scott Frost's subtle dig at Trev Alberts justified, or should he just let bygones be bygones?

Why things ended on a bitter note between Scott Frost and Trev Alberts

Right after firing, Alberts took to the press to discuss what prompted him to make the bold move. It was evident that there had been issues between the two. “Now Scott worked really hard here. Scott loves Nebraska…Our donors wanted it to work and everybody wanted it to work.  And so in a way, it is unfortunate and sad that we were here today.” He then hinted at what went wrong between the Huskers and their HC.

“I think at the end of the day there has to be accountability. When you run a professional organization that has high standards, accountability has to matter,” stated the former AD in his speech three years back. Looks like Scott could not deliver what he had promised.  As Alberts stated, “Scott and I talked about this very clearly. (A) 16-31 (record) obviously was not at a level that was acceptable to us.”

While Scott Frost still seems to carry the pain in his heart, Trev Alberts has moved on to the next chapter. After all, he now holds an important role. The Texas A&M AD has been one of the administrators who are now in the process of building a system in which the NCAA antitrust settlement’s changes can be applied. On the other hand, Frost too confirmed he intends to call the plays as he did during his first tenure as Knights coach. Can we expect a revert back from Alberts now?
