If college football is a theater of dreams, Friday night’s ACC Championship was Broadway at its finest at the Bank of America stadium in Charlotte. Clemson and SMU took the stage, and the performance didn’t disappoint. The Tigers seemed destined to steal the show, but the Mustangs clawed their way back in a fourth-quarter thriller, ending up turning even rivals as their fans. By the end, Clemson celebrated their hard-fought win, but it was the underdog Ponies who had Dabo Swinney singing their praises everywhere.

Standing amid the chaos of a victorious locker room, Swinney’s post-game interview with Molly McGrath turned into a heartfelt endorsement for SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee’s playoff hopes. “What a game,” Swinney exclaimed. “Listen. That’s a playoff football team. SMU, they better be in the dang playoffs. What a comeback by those guys.” His tone was genuine, his words unmistakable. Moments after his team punched its ticket to the College Football Playoff, Dabo Swinney couldn’t help but shine a spotlight on his rivals’ resilience.

And resilience is an understatement. Down 17 points with less than 10 minutes to play, SMU mounted a comeback that embodied the heart of college football. Tanner Mordecai’s precision passing and Jaylan Knighton’s relentless running fueled a rally that tied the game with 16 seconds left. The Ponies played with the kind of grit that should give the CFP Committee serious pause before leaving them out of the final four. “I mean, just an incredible performance by SMU,” Swinney said in another presser to ClemsonTigerNet. “They showed who they were and how they fought back.”

But if SMU’s comeback was poetry in motion, Clemson’s game-winning drive was a symphony of clutch execution. Following a 41-yard kickoff return by Adam Randall, Cade Klubnik connected with Antonio Williams for a 17-yard pass. That set the stage for Nolan Hauser’s 56-yard field goal—an ice-cold dagger as time expired. Hauser’s heroics ensured Clemson’s return to the playoffs, but even in triumph, the 2x Natty champ himself couldn’t help but advocate for Lashlee’s Ponies.

The CFP Committee now holds SMU’s fate in its hands till Sunday, and the debate is bound to rage. Ranked eighth entering the title game, the Mustangs made their case loud and clear. But will the committee value their grit over others’ résumés? If Dabo Swinney had a vote, there’d be no question. “That’s a team deserving of the playoffs,” he declared, echoing the sentiments of broadcasters Sean McDonough and Greg McElroy, who also marveled at SMU’s heart.

Sometimes, all you need is a (2) SMU Stats & Info on X: “”That’s a @CFBPlayoff football team. SMU, they better be in the dang playoffs. Coach Dabo found himself quoting Lloyd Christmas, Jim Carrey’s iconic character from Dumb and Dumber, after the Tigers’ fortunes took a surprising turn. Following their loss to South Carolina, Clemson’s chances of an at-large bid to the College Football Playoff seemed slimmer than Lloyd landing a date. But, as Swinney cheekily put it, “So you’re saying there’s a chance. Now we got a chance,” he said. “I think Lloyd Christmas said it best. ‘So you’re saying there’s a chance.’”

That “chance” came courtesy of unranked Syracuse, pulling off a stunning comeback to upset No. 6 canes. It was a game Clemson desperately needed to keep their ACC Championship hopes alive. After falling behind 21-0, the Orange clawed their way back, ultimately securing a dramatic win. Syracuse head coach Fran Brown even gave Swinney a shoutout postgame, saying, “Congrats, I got you in, baby!”

When Clemson hoisted the ACC Championship Trophy, Swinney made sure to return the favor. “I wanna go right back at Fran Brown and give Fran Brown a shoutout,” Swinney said. “We appreciate the opportunity to be here tonight.”
