Is Travis Hunter the Shohei Ohtani of college football? Can he redefine the Heisman race?

Not everything is bad about Deion Sanders Colorado Buffaloes. While the Buffs face challenges almost daily, there’s one bright spot that keeps Coach Prime going: his favorite two-way star, Travis Hunter. Hunter has earned so much respect from college football experts that they’ve compared him to Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani.

That’s quite a comparison, considering Ohtani is a rare player who excels as both a pitcher and a hitter. Sounds a lot like Hunter, right? Yahoo Sports, in collaboration with Rivals.com, even dedicated an entire episode to Hunter’s potential as a worthy Heisman contender.

They couldn’t resist bringing up the dual-threat comparison, even though we’ve heard it a hundred times already. The host went so far as to make a bold claim, saying, “This is Shohei Ohtani… He is playing full time both positions at a first-round NFL level.”

After all, playing both ways, that too full-time, and coming up with such impressive stats is nothing short of holding superpowers. While the Yahoo analysts might have been impressed by Hunter’s latest epic flex against the Colorado State Rams, Klatt could see that coming right before this season started and the dual-threat was yet to showcase his rage. On August 28, on the Joel Klatt Show, the analyst claimed, “We’ve also got a little bit of this like Ohtani factor, even more so than Charles Woodson or any of these other players. Like he’s legitimately a two-way player.”

Apart from the Yahoo Sports analyst, analyst Bart Scott too poured in with the same claim, “He’s the Shohei Ohtani of college football. … To me, he should be the No. 1 pick.” Well, besides the baseball star, Hunter landed a big label from within the football sport as well.

Have an interesting take?

While Hunter’s dual-threat talent, tackling both offense and defense is a known trait, his stamina is equally impressive. During their season opener against the Bison on August 29, Hunter played in 124 of 126 total snaps during Colorado’s 31-26 rout. The two-way star rose to fame as he totaled seven receptions for 132 yards topped up with two touchdowns. Not just this, but on defense he added three tackles.

These stats are like turbo boosters for his launch to the NFL platform. Even though he has yet to bid farewell to his college football career, he already found himself in the same line as the former New Orleans Saints cornerback. On ESPN”s “Get Up,” Kipper offered a lofty comparison, “You can make an argument 25 years ago it was what, Champ Bailey?”

But what made the analyst compare Travis Hunter to Champ Bailey who had played 16 seasons in the NFL? The analyst highlighted, “Dual-threat guy….Travis Hunter at Colorado – is he a corner? Yeah, he’s a great corner. Is he a receiver? Yeah, he’s a great there.” Are you ready for Hunter to treat NFL defenses like a light snack?
