With the season hitting its final stretch and the NFL draft around the corner, it feels like the thrilling climax of an action movie. One name that stood out this entire season was the Colorado Buffaloes’ Travis Hunter. While the Heisman buzz was huge, 2024 also witnessed some tense moments. Think about Cam Newton’s statements…

We all know how things got weird between Cam Newton and Travis Hunter when the former made a bold remark on Hunter’s pro league future. “Yes, I do think he can play both. Do I think he can play 72 plays on defense and another 57 on offense in the NFL? No,” he said. Here’s the thing: Everyone knows how badly Hunter wants to be a two-way player in the NFL. And such remarks from someone you look up to can hurt. But that doesn’t mean that things will just end on a bitter note, right?

Cam Newton has been a pivotal figure in Hunter’s career. The young lad, who was one of the top alumni of Newton’s C1N program, has grown both as an athlete and a person. Now, Travis Hunter’s mom, Ferrante Edmonds, is stepping up to set the record straight after rumors about a supposed fallout between her son and Cam Newton have been circulating.

During the BiggDoggChico show on January 12, Uncle Neely asked Ferrante where the best athletes hail from—Florida or Georgia. Ferrante, who’s seen both sides, quickly vouched for Florida. Naturally, the conversation turned to Georgia-born legend Cam Newton.

Ferrante reminisced about when Hunter first crossed paths with Newton at a 7-on-7 football tournament in Atlanta. “My boy Cam,” she said with pride, recalling how Newton invited Hunter to join his squad. “It was crazy because we were playing of another team. And Cam just walked up to us and like, ‘Let me holla at you’. ‘What’s what going on? You live in Atlanta?’ Yeah, we live in Atlanta. He was like, ‘So, what ya’ll doing?’ I’m like, what you mean, what we doing? Because at the time I’m like, okay so, what we supposed to be doing?

“And Travis was like, ‘That’s Cam Newton’. I’m like okay, that’s Cam Newton. I know some football but not to the extreme. And my son from that day he made a decision. ‘Hey, I’m gonna go play with Cam’.

“I was behind him with his decision that he made, and that turned out to be the best thing for him. Because you can see some of the highlights and the clips. I just be on the sideline just laughing at the stuff he be doing, and I’d be like, this boy dancing.”

Now, there was a notion of alleged beef between Newton and Hunter after the former made remarks on Hunter’s two-way skills. But their friendly interactions have proved the rumors wrong time and again. Remember that UCF game? Right before the Buffs’ 48-21 victory, the dual-threat star had a brief encounter with the NFL MVP. It seemed a bit awkward when Newton approached, and Hunter kind of brushed him off, laser-focused on his pre-game routine. But after the game, tensions eased, and they had a chance to chop it up.

“It would be my Cam Newton…That’s my coach,” he said, giving full credit to the way Newton helped shape him early in his career. It’s no secret that good things happen when talent meets the right guidance, and Newton is already in damage control mode for Hunter too.

Cam Newton did something unexpected for Travis Hunter…

Well, 2024 has been a roller coaster ride for Travis Hunter: From winning the Heisman to fighting battles in his personal life. But knowing him, it’s evident that he is a guy who never gives up. And his former ‘Coach’ Cam Newton is a legend, no doubt. He has a huge influence on a lot of young players. Of course, we can’t forget that he, too, won the Heisman way back in 2010. But things got a little messy back then, and he hasn’t been to the ceremony since.

It all started when his father, Cecil Newton, faced accusations of soliciting between $120,000 and $180,000 from Mississippi State boosters to secure Cam Newton’s commitment, which was an illegal act at the time. The controversy surrounding the alleged pay-for-play scheme led Newton to distance himself from the ceremony, overshadowing his Heisman legacy. After the story broke, authorities told Cecil Newton to stay away from the Heisman ceremony, so he missed witnessing his son’s big moment. That made Cam furious.

Now fast forward to December 2024; during an episode of his “4th and 1” podcast, Cam Newton revealed his father pressured him to attend the 90th Heisman ceremony, especially with Travis Hunter being the frontrunner for the award. So, then Cam Newton, just for the sake of supporting Travis in the Heisman ceremony, attended it.

“The only reason I’m going back is because of one of the former players in the C1N program, Travis Hunter. I’ve been a fan of all the former Heisman winners and finalists. It was just, it was bigger than that,” he said.

Newton has always been a staunch supporter of Hunter throughout his college career, and his loyalty paid off when Hunter, a star player, won college football’s most coveted individual award. Talk about a legendary support system!
