Home/College Football

The Mannings, the Kelces, The Diggs, and the Watts- instances of brotherhood are aplenty in the NFL. The next on that list are probably the Hunters. The elder one needs no introduction. “He’s definitely one of the best, if not the best, running back. But what Travis is doing, hasn’t been done. It really hasn’t,” Deion Sanders’ comments about Travis Hunter say it all about the two-way star. The younger Hunter, who comes with an extra ‘y’ in his name, still has a long way to go to at least come close to this legacy. But Trayvis Hunter’s trajectory in high school football might give his elder brother enough reason to believe that the legacy of the surname will be upheld in the CFB sphere.

Trayvis joined Effingham County High School, Springfield leaving Collins Hill when Travis bought a home in that area. That came as a Christmas gift for Rebels coach John Ford as he became the new kid on the block, adding more speed and big-play ability to ECHS’ already potent passing offense. And Ford saw the flashes of the Hunter gene in the very beginning.

“(Trayvis family) came out and said they’d like to visit. Heck, yeah. Trayvis is a good kid. We had a great conversation. When they got here, (Trayvis and his brother) were just messing around (racing) on the field and I was, ‘Oh my God, he’s running evenly with his brother’,” Ford had recalled. His speed was on full display in a game in August last year, in a scrimmage against Wayne County. He finished with three catches for a team-leading 43 yards and a touchdown. In the third quarter, Ford drew up a screen pass for his 5-foot-6, 135-pound sophomore. Trayvis looked like a dart heading 22 yards to hit the bullseye. And he knows this.

“I took one or two steps, caught it and my linemen blocked and the rest was just history. I’ve been fast all my life. It’s natural to me, make sure the other guy doesn’t catch me,” Trayvis had said about the play. When you pull such plays off in the gridiron and you have that Hunter tag after your name, it is of little surprise that eyes will turn toward you. In the latest development, the 2027 wide receiver prospect caught the eyes of one more school as he secured an offer from it.

This week, Trayvis announced on social media that he’s received his fourth Division I offer—this time from Georgia Southern University. On Instagram, he posted, “#ᴀɢᴛɢ Georgia Southern University Offered. ✝️🔥“. Looking at the Hunter kid making a name for himself at such a young age is an emotional moment for his mother and big brother. And their reactions? Pure pride. His mom, Ferrante Edmonds, couldn’t hold back, posting, “LETS GOOOO BABY!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥” while his brother, Travis, kept it simple but packed with fire: “🔥🔥🔥.” Edmonds also posted on her IG story, “Here’s another offer for @tray.4 Let’s Goooo.”

Notably, earlier, Tennessee State and Jackson State both extended offers on the same day, and the momentum didn’t slow down. Within a week of this, Trayvis received his third offer from Georgia State University. And with his heroics, the buzz around Trayvis is not unnatural. The Rebels made the Class 5A state playoffs thanks in part to Trayvis, who had a great season with 36 receptions, 496 yards, and 6 TDs. According to Maxpreps, Hunter has put up the bulk of his stats in the last four games of the regular season — catching 19 passes for 331 yards and five touchdowns.

Can Trayvis Hunter surpass his brother's legacy, or will he always be in Travis's shadow?

Have an interesting take?

With his remarkable speed, he beats defensive backs over the top and can turn short passes into big gains. This kid’s got a game, and the hype is only just beginning. And following that, his coach, John Ford, said, “The sky’s the limit for him.” And why not, when you have a brother like that? “I get asked about him a lot,” Trayvis said. “I don’t think anyone asked today, but it’s pretty often. I’m proud of what he’s been doing and the man he’s become. He was an influence all my life. He was always there for me. We played in the back yard and in the park.”

Coach Ford also vouches for that role model that Trayvis has. “You can tell (Trayvis) has grown up around the game,” Ford said. “He’s grown up with someone who plays it at a high level. (Trayvis) is smooth and just needs a sliver of grass to make a play. “By the time his third step hits the ground, he’s at full speed. He’s explosive and we’re excited to have him. Just give him the ball and let him do what God blessed him to do.” Interestingly, Trayvis’ 2nd offer comes with a twist—a blast from the past. The connection runs deep, adding even more excitement to his rise!

Offer #2 for Trayvis Hunter

Trayvis Hunter made waves on December 17, 2024, when he flashed not one but two Division I offers on his X and Instagram story. First, he announced, “Blessed to receive my 1st ever offer from Tennessee State University🔥🔥.” But the excitement didn’t stop there.

Later that day, he shared an update about his 2nd offer. This time, Trayvis got an offer from Jackson State, the same school where his brother, Travis, rose to prominence playing alongside Shedeur Sanders before Deion Sanders’ move to Colorado. Travis was even selected as a finalist for the coveted Jerry Rice Award, which is presented to the best FCS football freshman at Jackson State.
