Travis Hunter ditching LeBron for Coach Prime—Is this a sign of changing times in sports loyalty?

It’s safe to say that Deion was nothing but proud of his players when they pulled off the victory against the Baylor Bears on 22nd September. The entire team played their part perfectly well and eventually, their unity landed them a 38-31 win adorned with electric moments throughout. With Shedeur’s ‘hail-mary’ pass to LaJohntay Wester for the miraculous touchdown and Travis’ game-winning forced fumble, the Buffaloes proved all the critics wrong with the performance of the season. As such, no hard work should go unrewarded, which is exactly what Hunter capitalized on by digging an iconic gift from LeBron James’ to Deion out of his collection. Though his efforts seemed to be stained by his own sense of envy, he undermined his own reputation by claiming that the Lakers’ legend doesn’t know of him.

Travis Hunter’s official YouTube page released the gameday vlog from 22nd September which documented the WR’s entire journey through the training session to the iconic fumble. Later, he wanted to reward himself by taking the shoes that LeBron had gifted Coach Prime but interrupted the happy moment by muttering the words to himself, “He ain’t heard of me though.” This comment of Hunter’s, is in fact, not true since the NBA GOAT has spoken highly of the Colorado star in the past.

During Colorado’s season-opener against North Dakota, Hunter performed exceptionally well and recorded 3 touchdowns, which eventually led to their win by a score of 31-26. This impressed LeBron James, who took to X and tweeted, “MAN TRAVIS HUNTER IS RIDICULOUS!!!!! WOW” Another such instance occurred in 2023 when the Buffs won over the CSU Rams, which is where Hunter averaged 10.5 yards and James tweeted, “🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 Travis Hunter” to respect his performance. Thus, the Colorado WR seems to be underestimating his own popularity and while these are just social media tweets, James has met with Hunter and gifted him his memorabilia as well.

Throwback to when LeBron James gave gifts to Shedeur and Travis

During one of the games between the LA Lakers and the Denver Nuggets in 2023, both Shedeur and Travis were sitting courtside to spectate their favorite player score hoops. In what can only be termed a “fangirl” moment, both Shedeur and Travis practically jump up with joy when James approaches them personally and gives his respect to the two Colorado prodigies.

LeBron spoke to both Shedeur and Travis and said, “”I’mma send ya’ll your own package. I’mma send everything to all of ya’ll. Jerseys, shoes, everything. I got ya’ll, I’ll take care of ya’ll.” Sure enough, James sent a special package to both of them and saw the Buffs’ players show off their golden LeBron jerseys along with the iconic shoes. James has been an ardent Colorado fan throughout and for Hunter to claim that he doesn’t know of him is downright false. Yet, if he wishes to be a lot closer to the basketball legend, then he has to continuously play brilliantly enough to draw his attention.
