This is that time of the college football season when Heisman races get more interesting. Surprisingly, this year, the top two contenders are not the quarterbacks. Any guesses? You are right if Deion Sander’s two-way star and Ashton Jeanty popped into your head. Indeed, Hunter is deserving of the honor. His dual-threat sets him apart. Ashton Jeanty, who was leading the race for the past few weeks, is in the second position after Week 12. Now, the competition is getting more fierce as we get closer to the champions.

Let’s get into it. Cumulative snaps? Is there any chance that he may be talking about Coach Prime’s No. 12? Just kidding! Of course, he’s undermining Hunter’s game. Talking about the snaps, Hunterh has played around 1200 of those ‘not-that-great-as-per-some-people’ things for the Buffs this season. But is that it? Is that why Hunter advocates keep going gaga over him? Absolutely not. He’s a Heisman contender because he makes Heisman plays. So far, he has caught 74 receptions for 911 yards and scored nine touchdowns. On the other hand, he has recorded 23 tackles. Let’s not even get into the interceptions. He had one against the Utah Utes in Week 12. Offensively, he miraculously caught a 4th down pass attempt by jumping over two Utah defenders. That’s what he brings to every snap.
On the other hand, Jeanty has appeared in 10 games, completed 1893 rushing yards, which is the highest this season, and scored 26 touchdowns. This season, he also holds the record for most rushing yards and rushing touchdowns in a single season, a record set by the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders. Sanders completed 2,628 yards and scored 37 touchdowns in 1988. Clearly, Jeanty is on his way towards historic numbers.
Both can make the case to be the Heisman and of course, the whole thing is subjective. So, there will be opinions and counter-opinions. But let’s not undermine one to advocate for the other. Moving ahead, let’s see who is after Hunter and Jeanty in the race.
Is Cam Ward still a tough competitor?
If Hunter makes any mistake this week, Jeanty has a chance to lead again. But the competition is not just between both of them. Cam Ward, Alabama’s quarterback Jalen Milroe and Indiana’s QB Kurtis Rourke are also on the list. After Miama’s recent defeat against Georgia Tech, Ward’s odds have dropped significantly. It is not a good sign, but he is still a strong quarterback. As we know, the dynamics change every single week; again, no doubt, he has improved a lot and remains one of the best quarterbacks in the country.
If he delivers against Wake Forest and Syracuse, he has a high chance of being in the top spot. Oh, is Jalen Milroe a contender? He had a rollercoaster ride this season, but he is back on track. After disappointing a few weeks in the second half, he delivered one of his best performances last week. We are sure he has learned lots of lessons this season as he led the program to an impressive 8-2 record.
Meanwhile, another addition could be Indiana’s Kurtis Rourke, who is currently making headlines; he will improve his position if he helps Indiana set a new 11-0 record. Will he? Who do you think deserves the title?
