Home/College Football

College Football is its own little microcosm in the grand scheme of the sports realm. Among a multitude of facets that make it a standalone thing is the nature of the athletes. These aren’t professionals, so the laws of pro sport don’t quite translate over to them. It’s a bit more of an anarchy. These student-athletes have different issues, causing teams to forego them. Not just injuries, controversies or financial demands. But even unfavourable grades!

Michigan is a storied football program, unequivocally worthy of its status as a blueblood. But the school itself is of a certain stature, too. It appears that intervention from the academic side of things has perhaps caused Sherrone Moore and the Wolverines to miss out on a coveted target for their fractured receiving corp. A strange wrinkle in their transfer portal activity.

WR Troy Stellato will not be lining up at the Big House in maize and blue. Instead, he’s joining the Kentucky Wildcats, as per Pete Nakos. Troy playing for a team called the Wildcats…Is this a High School Musical sequel? Anyways, not to digress. Michigan fan and insider EJ Holland leveraged intel on the reason they missed out.

Over on “The Wolverine: Michigan Football and Basketball” platform, Holland said, The thing about [Troy] Stellato is he’s had some transcript issues.” Michigan also missed out on receiver Skyler Bell because of issues pertaining to his credits earlier in the offseason. History has repeated itself, and Sherrone Moore can’t really do much about it.

Missing out on Stellato, primarily a slot receiver, doesn’t inhibit coach Moore too much in the grand scheme of things. Michigan remains in the reckoning for prospective targets. EJ Holland spoke glowingly about Tru Edwards, another transfer portal player who’s on their radar and “might take a visit” to Ann Arbor as per Holland. “He’s arguably the best receiver I’ve come across that Michigan has been recruiting” he said. Another WR who’s got ties to a new member of the Wolverines has been floated.

Kaedin Robinson has a self-proclaimed offer from Michigan already, alongside 9 other schools. The player rose in ranks from the JuCo level and has thwarted conventionality to now possibly be a Wolverine. The timeline of events suggests Michigan was the first school to approach Robinson with an offer. A head start, albeit very slight, could prove beneficial. EJ Holland brought up 2 key factors that could tip the scales for Sherrone Moore and co.

Is Michigan's academic rigor a blessing or a curse for their football program's success?

The pieces could fall in place for Sherrone Moore and the Wolverines just yet

Michigan’s quarterbacking issues this season were well-documented. Sherrone Moore having to deploy 3 different players under centre meant his first year as HC was a bit of a poisoned chalice. Through all the personnel changes, they still couldn’t fill their JJ McCarthy-shaped void. Bryce Underwood sensationally got swayed into coming. However, throwing him straight into the deep end isn’t particularly wise.

The transfer portal presented a means to bridge the gap with some experience while the freshman earned his stripes. Coach Moore did just that, bringing in Mikey Keene. Now, this shrewd move could domino into them also getting Kaedin Robinson. “[Robinson] was part of the same recruiting class as new Michigan quarterback transfer Mikey Keene, so Keene knows Robinson. I’m sure Keene will be instrumental in helping Michigan recruit Robinson…those ties should help the Wolverines” said EJ Holland. He then shed light on another interesting wrinkle.

Holland stated, “Another tie here is Robinson’s agent. [He’s] actually the same agent that helped with Michigan’s recruitment of Donovan McCulley, who Michigan landed out of the portal last month. So they’ve already worked with Robinson’s agent. There’sa  familiarity there. That could help,” Robinson is yet to schedule an official visit. However, the takeaway here is that Sherrone Moore does have contingencies in the pipeline. Not landing Troy Stellato shouldn’t hamper them too much.
