Some very somber and excruciating news is reverberating out of Tallahassee. Florida State University has become the backdrop of a school shooting. Some very disturbing videos and pictures from the Student Union on campus, the site of the tragedy, have struck the airwaves. Amidst tons of panic and attempts to quell that panic, Seminoles’ quarterback Thomas Castellanos has offered his prayers.
As many as 5 fatalities and 4 injuries have been reported down at FSU. Two active shooters made their way onto campus and caused mayhem. The identities of said shooters are currently undisclosed. One of them is dead, while the other is in custody. Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare has said it’s “actively receiving and caring for patients.” Everybody on campus has been ordered to shelter in place, and the university is under lockdown.
With most details still unreported and/or under wraps, Thomas Castellanos took to social media to send love to those affected. Over his IG handle, he relayed an X post from “FSU Alert” which details the ongoing from campus. “An active shooter has been reported in the area of Student Union. Police are on scene or on the way. Continue to seek shelter and await further instructions. Lock and stay away from all doors and windows and be prepared to take additional protective measures,” read the initial post. Thomas Castellanos wrote, “Sending prayers to everyone🙏” The Seminoles are a massive part of the school and an entity that brings about a collective cheer to the community. Castellanos will hope the people affected, both directly and indirectly, can find solace in these turbulent times.

Thomas Castellanos only arrived in Tallahassee from Boston College via the transfer portal this offseason. He’s touted to take over the QB1 shirt straightaway. Being the starting quarterback for a program of this ilk carries a stature and, by extension, a massive responsibility. In many ways, the quarterback is the face of the university nationwide. So for Castellanos to be one of the first Seminoles to offer his players condolences, despite never actually playing a game for the school, is resounding. But this is not a competition, and it’s certainly not a race to be the quickest or most profound. These circumstances are much, much bigger than football. In the backwash of the shooting, FSU has canceled all classes until at least Friday. Sporting events for the weekend have also been cancelled.

Sickening details of this premeditated attack on FSU slowly emerging
Police officials found a handgun on the suspect, who was taken into custody. A shotgun was found in the student union, and another gun was found in the suspect’s car, according to a law enforcement official. While the names of the deceased remain undisclosed, our deepest condolences go out to them and their family.
The Tallahassee Police Department is holding a press conference to debrief the ordeal. It’s reportedly planned for 4.30 pm Eastern on Thursday. More details should become conspicuous in due course. Until then, spare a thought for those students who have met a horrible and premature demise. Inter-school rivalries aside, football animosity aside. There’s been some bad news within the Seminoles camp earlier today, but this takes precedence over everything.
