A little more than a week remains until the NFL Draft finally starts in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Just as the date gets closer, the analysts are getting more coffee breaks than ever, and the scouts will be pulling all-nighters to prepare for the ultimate trade fest of America. The days inching closer have also brought out the most unexpected revelations in the ‘expectations’ market and have seen two QBs, Jaxson Dart and Tyler Shough, rise gradually through their ranks.

Initial mock drafts considered these two QBs to be not more than second- or third-round picks, and they were only considered ‘backup’ options at best. Now, the QBs are increasingly in demand as the Giants have recently arranged a private workout session with both of them separately. This shows that the QBs still have a lot to show and prove before the 24th of April actually rolls in. However, that being said, an unexpected QB is challenging both the QBs’ landing spots with the Giants.

E.J. Manuel, the ESPN analyst and former first-round QB pick to the Bills in the draft in 2013, was asked in a recent video about the Giants’ choice in picking their QB. The analyst pointed out clearly that the Giants would refrain from picking a QB with their 3rd pick in the first round. “How would they come up, though, because if they take Abdul Carter in the third pick, they would just have to pick the quarterback in the second round, which I think is a safe spot to take a quarterback?”  The analyst then provided the potential pick the Giants could go for at the QB position in the second round.

Manuel clearly said that the Giants would be picking a QB in the second round. They wouldn’t have the luxury of choosing between Jaxson Dart or Tyler Shough since the two players, in his words, “won’t be there” to pick from in the first place. That gives the Giants the option to draft Jalen Milroe in the second round at the 34th pick. Manuel expanded on the idea.

Give me Jalen Milroe because of this situation. You’ve got Russell Wilson there, you’ve got Jameis Winston there, you’ve got two veterans, right? So those guys are going to be on the roster, maybe you trade one of them if they don’t play well in the preseason, something like that, and then you have Jalen Milroe. But they hold down the second guy, but I like the intangibles that this kid brings when I watch him play.”

The Giants have signed Russell Wilson on a one-year $10.5 million contract and have signed former Browns QB Jameis Winston on a two-year $8 million deal. Winston, 31, and Wilson, 36, might not be the long-term options for Brian Daboll, the Giants’ head coach. The signing of the former Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe becomes crucial. However, it’s also possible that the Giants could draft Jalen Milroe as a backup in the late first round. So we may still see the Giants trading up a few spots in the first round to acquire the services of Milroe. But what will Milroe bring to the table?

What will Jalen Milroe be like at the Giants?

The former Alabama quarterback has raked up 7,593 yards in his college career and has played under both Kalen DeBoer and Nick Saban as a starter. Just last season, the QB threw for 2,844 yards, and prior to that, he had another 2,800+ passing yards season. But the most stunning aspect of Milroe is his rushing ability.

The Texas native had notched up more than 700 rushing yards with a whopping 20 touchdowns, and prior to that, had 531 rushing yards with Saban scoring 12 touchdowns. This is something that stands out in the QB and will be the USP for him. Gerald ‘Smoke’ Dixon, a prominent analyst and former NFL scout, described Milroe’s abilities quite aptly.

When you look at him (Jalen Milroe), he’s not a finished product. He’s somebody who has a skill set that you can teach. If you get the right person, you can get him there because he can get out of there, and he can make something happen. He can make all the throws, and I’m telling you, I saw Josh Allen grow over the years to be one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history. It didn’t start just one day. It takes being put in situations where he’s still learning how to play the position.”

Josh Allen, the current Buffalo Bills QB, had just a 56.2% completion rate in his rookie season and had a passer rating of 67.9. This cast immense doubts on the QB’s abilities, and the Bills’ trade-up in the draft for the QB was said to be a ‘blunder.’ It all turned around quite well, right? And we all know how good of a player Josh Allen is. So, Milroe, in this context, could also see a similar redemption arc under Winston and Wilson’s mentorship if the Giants draft him. But will they?
