Can Kalen DeBoer ever fill the legendary shoes of Nick Saban after Alabama's shocking losses?

Let’s revisit the first few weeks of the 2024 college football season. Alabama reached the No. 1 spot on the AP poll after dominating the Georgia Bulldogs. However, Kalen DeBoer‘s happiness was short-lived. They lost their next game against an unranked Vanderbilt, which left the Bama fans devastated. Alabama didn’t give them time to recover from that trauma when they faced another painful loss to Tennessee. Now, ahead of their upcoming game against LSU, a college football analyst is calling out Kalen DeBoer for Alabama’s pathetic condition.

On the latest episode of ESPN College Football, analyst Stephen A Smith lost his calm looking at Alabama’s poor state under first-year head coach Kalen DeBoer. “You lost to Vanderbilt! You lost to Vanderbilt! Vanderbilt! Okay, you succeed Nick Saban. You go in there, you got a 28-nothing lead against Georgia. By the way, they come back and take the lead before Milroe connects with the freshman and the 17-year-old freshman. And you escape with that. You turn around and lose to Vanderbilt. Now, Tennessee is different, but Vanderbilt? Props to them, okay? Props to them.”

Since then, Bama managed a win over South Carolina and a 34-0 victory over Missouri. Smith just can’t forget Bama’s painful loss to Vanderbilt, which no one has thought in their wildest dreams. The ultimate damage has been done to Alabama making playoffs? But, can they still go to the playoffs?

As per Smith, “Now they [Alabama] could make the playoffs. Okay, you’re not making the playoffs if you’re a three-loss team; both they and LSU are two-loss teams. So this is basically like a playoff this weekend, okay? It’s a big-time game. He can’t wait to see it right, but I would say Roll Tide, baby. Alabama all day, every day, if Nick Saban was there. But with this damn Kalen DeBoer, I’m not sold. They could go on the road, you’re in Death Valley and win a game at LSU.”

All in one, it’s a must-win game for both the teams, but a little more important for DeBoer if he doesn’t want to end up having a disappointing season. Brian Kelly would stress that his team equally needs the win, but he hasn’t replaced the GOAT. Kalen DeBoer has. Can Bama do it? Let’s look at the odds.

Odds for Kalen DeBoer to beat Brian Kelly’s team
