The South Carolina Gamecocks finished the 2024 season as the 19th-ranked college football team in the country. Their overall record was 9-4. Not that good, right? But so what? This season, the picture is a lot different. They have already tapped into the NFL hype. The scouts were there to pick talent for the NFL Draft and they see a lot of potential. “I feel like this is a breeding ground for professional football,” said John Fassel, Tennessee Titans special teams coordinator. However, this immediately raises the bar for Shane Beamer’s squad. Right now, all eyes fall upon their front-runner, their $3.7 million quarterback. That’s when South Carolina’s offensive coordinator comes up with their quarterback’s blueprint moving into the spring…
Moving into the 2025 season, Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers brings in some main character energy. He entered his first year at South Carolina in 2023 as a redshirt freshman backup to Spencer Rattler. The redshirt freshman finished the year as one of the very best players in the sport and became an All-SEC performer and the conference’s Freshman of the Year in the process. Over the two years, Sellers racked up 2620 yards and 20 touchdowns. So, it’s obvious that he will find himself in the Heisman buzz in 2025. So, Beamer and co. had to keep the doors locked. On Christmas Eve, South Carolina’s official NIL collective, The Garnet Trust, announced it had agreed to a deal with Sellers. The quarterback is ranked eighth in the country by On3’s NIL Valuation, with a value of $3.7 million.

The 2024 season gifted Sellers with some of the best moments. He ended the regular season on a six-game winning streak. However, there are also some areas where the quarterback needs to put some extra attention. Beamer’s signal-caller needs to develop more in going through his progressions and hitting open receivers downfield. So, what’s the progress towards fixing this? Gamecocks’ offensive coordinator Mike Shula is the best man to address it. On April 14, the coach faced the media as South Carolina gears up for their April 15 spring practice. During the press meet, a reporter questioned, “How would you say LaNorris has meshed with those new receivers, and will you use Friday as a sort of checkpoint to see where that chemistry is?” Shula replied, “Maybe not as a checkpoint, just as maybe another reference point of continuing to get those guys reps together.”
The returning players are Nyck Harbor, Mazeo Bennett, Jared Brown, and Vandrevius Jacobs. However, Norris will now have to connect with a six-man freshman class of wideouts. The newly-formed group includes Malik Clark, Brian Rowe, Jordon Gidron, Jayden Sellers, Lex Cyrus, and Donovan Murph. Shula continued, “We’re not there yet with with all the guys that are going to be playing with the timing with those guys and LaNorris, but you know we don’t we don’t need to be there yet… We’ll evaluate all this at the end of the off-season.” As one could expect, though, Sellers has a great connection with the guys he’s played with already. Now, what is the quarterback’s take on the wide receivers’ room?
He is looking forward to the experience. Sellers made an appearance on 107.5 The Game’s Gamecock Club Hour radio program. There, he said, “I think [the young receivers] are coming along good. But I’m excited to work with them. It’s good working with them. I’m having fun.” Other than building rapport with the new guys in the hood, the quarterback needs to prove himself to Beamer.

Shane Beamer’s call for LaNorris Sellers
The Gamecocks’ head coach was lucky enough to witness a wonderful freshman season by Sellers in 2024. After all, we all know how difficult it is for freshman quarterbacks to perform in the rugged terrain of the SEC. Now that the quarterback has proved himself brilliantly, Beamer and co. does not want to settle for less. So, Sellers got to hit the ‘LEVEL UP’ button. As South Carolina goes through spring practices leading up to the Garnet & Black Spring Game on April 18, Sellers is showing Beamer that he is capable of those improvements.
The LSU game couldn’t have been going much better for the Gamecocks. The game looked to go in anyone’s favor, such close has been the call. The Gamecocks were up 17-0, but that’s when LSU closed the difference with 10 quick points. However, Norris stole the show, responding with a huge 75-yard touchdown run. The quarterback pulled the ball out of WR Jared Brown and shot through the middle of South Carolina’s offensive line. But something is missing in Sellers’ mix. And what’s that?

On April 11, Shane Beamer made an appearance on the SEC Network. He had dished out his expectations from LaNorris Sellers straightforwardly. “He’s established. Last year, he was trying to find his way. He’s competing after a season like he had in 2024. I see him being more vocal, being willing to hold his teammates and himself accountable. Just a lot more confidence in the role and confident in himself and more vocal.” Last season, the quarterback played in the backfoot when it came to his confidence. But this season, holding the same stance won’t fit the picture as he is meant to lead the team. Time for him to sip on some confidence juice.
