Is Tennessee's cigar celebration a bold tradition or a disrespectful jab at Alabama's legacy?

The college football is blazing. The toasts are burnt, the cards are reshuffled, and the nerves of Kalen DeBoer’s Alabama fans are wrecking. The Bama squad faced the second biggest roadblock in their playoff aspiration this Saturday against Tennessee. The loss immediately sent coach DeBoer into the hot seat for obvious reasons while veterans have been busy dishing advice to the struggling Nick Saban’s successor. In between, one crispy detail that made fans talk was how super psyched-up Tennessee fans burst into the post-win celebration with cigars in their hand. Weird? Well, even if it’s, it’s for a unique tradition of the Vols that gets questioned by none other than the quintessential Mississippi State guy Brandon Walker.

College football games are full of quirks that make it even more inquisitive to watch out for. To substantiate, you can recollect any recent memory of a fan doing something crazy in public after his favorite QB scores a touchdown or the established winning gesture of the team to take home a model, antique axe-like trophy. But all of this is just an outdated trend now as the Vols fans lit up the gallery with cigars in their mouth in standout victory applause.

While the fun-filled celebration goes against the NCAA norms, the Vols were too thrilled to care and Tide wasn’t in a place to move out from the tragedy they just came fresh off. But the trademark Bulldogs faithful and Sports gambling analyst didn’t buy that well. Throwing shades to the Vols’ culture and etiquette, the veteran journalist tweeted, ‘‘None of these Tennessee fans have any idea how to smoke a cigar,” posting a clip of the viral celebration.

As fans get offended in the comments section, firing him back with Mississippi State’s poor stats in the season, Walker again silenced them, and it reads  ”Shocking, I know. But some people feel as if Mississippi State’s record this season should stop me from talking about… Are Tennessee fans smoking cigars?.”

The scene might be a little obscene in the gallery, but the history behind it is enticing, especially when you get to know that the trailblazer of his trend is not really the Vols, but rather the Bamas. The Tennessee fanbase was just there returning the favour of an age-old insult.

The victory cigar is something that has been a signature thing in the Alabama-Tennessee rivalry since 1961. The reason?  Alabama athletic trainer Jim Goostree once lighted up a stogie in the locker room and pulled in a crazy dance after the Crimson Tide clinched its first victory over the Vols, forging out a seven-year drought. Players joined forces with the man. With the timely evolution, the practice traversed beyond the Tuscaloosa border and slid into Tennessee’s locker room.
