Whenever we switch to college football games and turn on our television, there’s always one voice that has been giving us those in-depth insights and entertaining us with those intriguing color commentary. That man is undoubtedly Kirk Herbstreit, an alum of Ohio State who also played as a quarterback for the college. The Buckeyes fandom certainly runs thick in Herbstreit’s blood, as he was even the starting quarterback throughout his senior season. In that case, his son Chase’s case becomes intriguing.
Kirk has four sons in total: Jake, Tye, Zak, and Chase. Jak initially played for Clemson as a walk-on and saw limited action. He even transferred to Ohio State later to focus on academics since his football career didn’t take off at Clemson. Tye also played for Clemson as a walk-on, but he also didn’t start at all in any games and ultimately moved on from football. But one of Kirk’s sons is now changing all that and may even brew a full-fledged rivalry when he steps onto the field.
The arrival of Chase Herbstreit has come with quite a bit of anticipation and fanfare at Michigan. But, more than that, the young quarterback has riled up the Buckeyes fans after committing to Michigan. Now, in a recent press conference, head coach Sherrone Moore even announced Kirk’s son’s official arrival.

“We’ll look at different options and what we need to do.” The head coach discussed the depth of his quarterback room first and then announced the arrival of Chase Herbstreit. “We’ve got Chase Herbstreit coming in this summer, you know, as well.” The head coach then mentioned the evaluation that needs to be done on the QBs present on the roster. “So we’ll have Mikey (Keene) evaluate, see where Davis (Jadyn) is, and we’ll see, you know, what that situation looks like.”
Chase Herbstreit is a talented prospect with a 3-star rating in the 2025 class. He is ranked as the 131st QB in the country and stands at 6’2″ and 190 lbs. The QB also had a decent career in his high school as he threw for 1,600 yards for 18 touchdowns and also rushed for 649 yards, scoring 8 touchdowns in his senior season. The dual-threat talent makes Chase one of the better prospects in the current class. Still, his place in the QB room this season might be too distant.
QB battle gets intense at Michigan amid Sherrone Moore’s revelation
This season, Sherrone Moore prepared well and delivered a 6th-ranked recruitment class in the country. But even in it, the most prized possession was stealing the generational prodigy Bryce Underwood from LSU. The QB comes with a $12 million tag and immense potential to lead the program. But the program still needs depth, right? Moreover, there may be some names that are challenging even for Bryce Underwood’s spot.
“All those guys have—you know, I’d say Jadyn Davis has really taken huge steps this fall camp and played really more confidently, and you can see the glimpses of things that he did in high school really show up in spring ball. So been proud of his progress and what he’s done and made the competition even better.” Sherrone Moore said while speaking to On3’s J.D. PicKell.

Jadyn Davis is thus emerging as a solid contender in the QB battle. While it may seem an uphill battle at first glance for Davis. Still, Moore isn’t opening his cards too soon and revealing his QB1. Moreover, like Bryce Underwood, Davis was also a five-star prospect in 2024 and came after an incredible senior season at his high school, where he threw for 3,370 yards at a 70% efficiency. The QB even said, “I’ve never been scared to compete… I’m going to do what is right for me and my family“.

The resolve that Davis is showing amid the arrival of a player like Bryce Underwood is unparalleled. Chase Herbstreit will hardly get any snaps this year or next year, for that matter, as Mikey Keene is also in the line. Still, Chase’s commitment to Michigan is fuel enough for the Buckeyes fans to wage keyboard wars on social media.
