It’s time Sherrone Moore gets back to the drawing board. And so, he thinks. You expect a team to come up with answers after coming out of a bye week. What you don’t expect is a sixth-year veteran like Jack Tuttle, third QB1 of the year for the Wolverines, to be as erratic as contributing two turnovers (1 interception and 1 fumble), and ultimately losing the game against Illinois, 21-7, the lowest point total for the Wolverines in a game since the 2014 season!
Going into the bye week, Tuttle’s rocky performance was evident. Two weeks prior, facing the Washington Huskies, Tuttle went 10-of-18 for 98 yards, a touchdown, and an interception in a 17-27 loss. But you have got to feel for HC Sherrone Moore.
In all fairness, Tuttle is the best QB1 option for Michigan right now, considering he has made some plays through the air that neither senior Davis Warren nor junior Alex Orji could deliver. If you compare his performances, Tuttle did throw more yards than any Michigan quarterback this season, so his stat line wasn’t a complete disaster. But here’s the kicker: in the crucial moments of the second half, Tuttle’s turnovers crushed any momentum the Wolverines had left against the Huskies. Moore’s words before going into the bye week echoed the same sentiment: He’s not happy, but Tuttle is the best he’s got.

I think right now he gives us the best chance to win, Moore said, with all things considered.
After a dismal performance from the offense where QB1 went 20-of-32 attempts for 208 yards and two turnovers against Illinois, Moore didn’t mince his words. The disappointment was evident, so much so that he was crystal clear about re-evaluating the lack of execution even if it meant going as deep as what he as well as his assistant coaches were doing wrong.
“Just overall offensively, it wasn’t good enough at all,” Moore said. “Disappointing in a lot of areas. Can’t turn the ball over… But we had three turnovers in a Big Ten game — doesn’t matter who you play, you’re not going to win. So we just have to be better on offense. I think we just have to reevaluate… I feel disappointed in myself as the head coach… There’s no finger-pointing. Reevaluate myself and see what I need to do to be better for them, for the players and coaches, as well.”
So, what’s the latest going forward? The Maize and Blue HC has an update.
In the Michigan Football Radio show, Moore said, “I think right now Jack will be the guy, but you have to go through the week and see what happens.” With that said, Moore added that Davis will get more “in the mix” this week. No mention of Orji, or freshman Jadyn Davis and junior Jayden Denegal, who initially did not make the cut on the travel roster to Illinois.
“We’ve got a plan, and I think the biggest thing we need to do with the plan is keep it simple ”” not too simple, where the defense just knows everything. But for us, just keep it simple that our guys can execute a plan and let those guys compete, let those guys go out there and show who’s gonna execute at a high level and take care of the football.”
