Sherrone Moore has a lot on his plate in his first year as Michigan Wolverines‘ head coach. Not only does he have to lead the reigning national champions to a perfect win season, but he’s also got to deal with the NCAA investigation hanging over his head. And to add to that, Netflix just dropped that “Sign Stealer” doc about Connor Stallions, trying to capitalize on all the hype around Michigan.

Now, Stallions is at the center of the team’s alleged “illegal” sign-stealing scandal. But instead of playing the victim, he takes a clever approach in the documentary, chuckling as he subtly denies all the accusations. Even a college football expert is weighing in, offering his balanced support for Michigan.

On the August 28th episode of the Joel Klatt Show, Klatt breaks down the Netflix documentary thoroughly. He sticks to the facts and NCAA rule books and seems to lean toward Moore’s side. “Sign-stealing occurs in almost every single game in college football. That’s a fact,” Klatt asserts.

While that might be true, he notes the real issue is how each team handles it. He explains, “It happens in games just looking across the field at the opposing signs, it happens in advanced scouting but without technology through television copy… And then the third way is advanced illegal scouting.” Well, for Moore’s team, the spotlight is on this third method. And Klatt also bluntly says, “All three of those occurred.”

So, the question isn’t whether Michigan did it but rather who knew about it and for how long. With the investigation heating up, Moore & Co. are going to face some serious consequences, and getting off scot-free is a long shot. We might even see a Harbaugh-like suspension for Moore soon.

Sherrone Moore is to face suspension

Sherrone Moore has been with the Wolverines for 7 years, and there’s a good chance he was aware of the illegal scouting going on. He’s already on the NCAA’s radar as a “repeat violator” for recruiting violations during the COVID ban. That even earned him a one-game suspension last season. Then came the Connor Stallions case, where Stallions allegedly sent people to record opponents’ hand signals from the stands—a clear violation that Joel Klatt describes as the third “illegal” type of scouting.

At the time, Moore was the offensive coordinator and was caught deleting over 50 texts from Stallions, leading to a Level 2 violation. With the investigation still underway, Moore faces more significant risks ahead. Experts suggest he might face more than just a one-game suspension this time. On August 26th, team insider James T. Yoder commented, “I think the minimum outcome will be… Sherrone Moore sitting out a game or possibly 2 or 4 games next season.” Another insider, Michael Hartwell, went further, predicting Moore could “be suspended for the entire 2024 season.”

It’s starting to look like a repeat of last year’s situation with Jim Harbaugh, where the HC was suspended for 3 games during a crucial point in the season. Interestingly, that’s when Sherrone Moore stepped in as their interim coach. Now, if Moore is suspended, who will step up in his place?
