Is Kirk Campbell really to blame for Michigan's struggles, or is there more to the story?

When the Michigan Wolverines entered the 2024 kickoff, did you expect the 2023 defending champions to be in such a sticky spot? Time for you to get the reality check that your favorite Wolverines are not the best anymore and have one of the worst offenses. So now who will have to make the call?

Of course the debut HC Sherrone Moore. He is now advised to let go of the Michigan Assistant Coach, offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell, in case he wants to bring his boys back on the right track. As the fans throw Campbell under the bus, Moore, along with other coaches, got all defensive about the faltering offensive coordinator.

Shocking plunge in Michigan numbers under debut HC Moore

For Michigan fans, you might come across this question a lot more now: “Does Michigan do anything well offensively?” The answer is straightaway NO. Moore’s squad is near the bottom in all of college football in passing offense. You would be shocked to know the numbers. They are just averaging 134.6 yards per game. Back in 2023, the average was 382.7 yards per game. Now you know how they deteriorated. So Moore was now advised on the Michigan Sports Talk podcast on areas he is going wrong. “It was the play calling Kirk Campbell he just is not doing a great job,” the host said.

The podcast host then dished out a brutal yet important question for Moore—“I don’t know how, can you now continue with Kirk Campbell being the offensive coordinator?” He then took the help from the stats; for instance, the Wolverines offense has put up 30 points this season without the defensive help that makes them “one of the worst offenses we have seen here at Michigan.” Because of Campbell’s poor strategy, even their QB, Davis Warren, had to pay a heavy cost when the coach knew he was inexperienced yet the offensive line failed to come up with a clean pocket. With this, the QB was stuck at 16 for 32 in 137 yards. And this was enough to fuel the fan frustrations.

Sherrone Moore takes Kirk Campbell’s side as fan frustration grows

Even though Campbell had been in Ann Arbor even before Moore stepped in, the offensive analyst seems to have lost the Michigan fans’ confidence. After losing to Indiana Hoosiers on October 9, one of the fans posted on social media, “Naming Kirk Campbell OC probably goes down as one of the worst hires in Michigan history.” As time went by, the attacks got all the more harsh.

Another enraged fan wrote, “Sometimes I think Kirk Campbell was dealt a tough hand. And then, at other times, I think, yeah but he’s holding the cards facing out.” But the Michigan coaches still talk in the offensive coordinator’s favor. For instance, Steve Casula, the tight end’s coach addressed the criticism and defended his fellow coach, “There’s nobody that wants (to perform well) more than (Campbell). He’s organized, he’s detailed, he certainly isn’t retreating.” And what about Moore?

The Michigan HC, too, was in no mood to lash out at Kirk Campbell. He rather took a diplomatic stance and said, “I think for us, it’s got to be a collective effort on how we do this and how we formulate the offense. Got to just be better as a whole group. It’s not just (Campbell), it’s got to be everybody. Everybody’s got to be a team, and we got to do everything together.” Looks like Sherrone Moore will turn dead ears to the advice given to call it off with the offensive coordinator.
