Shedeur Sanders in the first round—genuine talent or just riding his dad's coattails?

Controversy and Sanders go hand in hand. Back on July 18th, we saw Frank Michael Smith present a very harsh criticism of Shedeur Sanders and the Buffs. “setting his team up for disaster,” Smite had noted. It’s not any new fact that the 2023 season was rough for Coach Prime and the Buffs. Shedeur led his team to a 4-8 record, while also losing 6 games straight before closing the season. While in 2023, we did see glimpses of greatness from the kid; he was still sacked more than any other QB that year. All because his defense was never good. However, with all the changes Deion Sanders has made to the team in regards to the O-line, Shedeur Sanders should have a competitive advantage.

And it looks like On3 agrees because they decided to put Shedeur on the 4th pick for the Titans on the mock draft list on August 22nd. However, this sent the entire fandom into a frenzy. A fan quickly pointed out, “Shedeur that high is crazy.” While it is understandable why people hate Shedeur this much, it’s still weird that people refuse to check the stats and actual information. Joel Klatt pointed it out perfectly back on August 18th. Klatt noted, You’ve got one of the best QBs in the game, Yes, Colorado is going to the Bowl game.” His argument makes sense because if we look a the stats alone, Shedeur is probably one of the top players in 2024. Back in 2023, the kid managed to pull in more than 30 touchdowns along with 3200 yards. If you call this an overrated season, then probably every quarterback around the world would ask for this season. Even ESPN’s Field Yates, who had made the mock draft list for On3 had noted, “he’s an absolutely surgical pocket passer.” Shedeur shines when it comes to his accuracy and passing and his 69% completion rate stands as the primary evidence of this.

However, if we come back to the On3 list. The Titans don’t make much sense. While it is true that Shedeur could be the perfect replacement for Will Levis, the kid is still going to the Giants. Everyone knows at this point that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones madly wants Shedeur on the team. With Dak Prescott’s contract issues and QB Daniel Jones performing poorly, Shedeur is the perfect guy to get everything up to speed for the team. Still, while we wait for the final draft that’s going to take place in 2025, let’s tune into the jabs that the fans have so graciously presented to Shedeur.

Jabs for days for Shedeur Sanders

One fan was quite harsh with his comments. “Shedeur should be nowhere near the first round let alone top 5,” they wrote on X. This again makes no sense. As we have established before, Shedeur is a solid QB. The main areas that he lacked, that even analyst Daniel Jeremiah had pointed out are his overall defenses. With Pat Shurmur now on the team, we can expect Shedeur to improve drastically. Another fan mentioned, “All this Sanders love, and what exactly has he proven? That he can go 4-8?” Well, in all honestly, Shedeur proved that he knows how to play the game. As Jeremiah had pointed out, Shedeur is amazing when it comes to driving the ball downfield. What he lacked in 2023 was the support that could help him survive between a triangle of defenders. He has that now.

One fan took shots at whichever GM decides to take Shedeur up. “If Sheduer gets drafted that high the GM who does it needs to be fired,” they mentioned. Pretty sure no one is getting fired if Shedeur is picked by the Titans or Cowboys. Another fan pointed out that Shedeur Sanders does not deserve to be that high on the mock draft list. “Shedeur shouldn’t be this high lol,” they noted. ESPN’s Jordan Reid had mentioned in his scouting report that Shedeur is always in the minds of NFL analysts as a top pick for the 2025 year. Because if we look beyond his entire “top sacked QB” thing, he has the accuracy, strength, and presence on the field to become the No.1 QB in college football. Finally, one fan jokingly mentioned that if Sheduer gets picked for the Titans, he might have a heart attack. “The fire of hatred that’d burn within me if shedeur became a titan would give me a heart attack,” they wrote on X. However, right now, fans should focus more on how Shedeur and the boys perform this season.

Have an interesting take?

Because Coach Prime knows very well that it is make or break this year. Even with all the changes, if the team manages to fail then there won’t be anything left to salvage. Let’s hope the Buffs bring in a good run.
