College football coaches have always played their part in influencing any player’s prospects with the NFL draft. But what would happen if one of the prominent coaches also happens to be your father? Well, it will seem like a classic case of ‘born with a silver spoon’. And, Shedeur Sanders and his father, the Colorado Buffaloes head coach, are in a bit of a similar situation. And their relationship seems to be turning more heads than ever now.
Well, it may seem at first glance that Shedeur Sanders is ‘the’ son of Coach Prime, and that may have a bigger bearing on his career than one would imagine. And that is right in many aspects. But Shedeur is not a normal player. He is the ‘alchemist’ of college football. He has taken that silver spoon and transformed it into a 24-carat gold one studded with diamonds. His 74% pass completion rate for 4,134 yards is a testament to that in the 2024 season. The player hardly looked out of form in any game, barring that Nebraska defeat. And now that he is slated to be the topmost player in the NFL draft, he has a message for his father, and it’s a strict one.
Talking to Yahoo Sports in an interview, he was asked about their whole process of building to April’s draft. “It has been cool because, you know, at least I’m done talking to my dad now, so you know.” He spoke with a strict yet hilarious tone, playfully warning his dad that he was now making his own decisions. He then added, “Sometimes I was at a game, and he kept FaceTiming. I said look, I got my priorities right now. You know I’m with my future coaches right now. I’ll call you later; I got to call you later when the business is over with.” The interview then cheekily suggested to ‘turn on Do Not Disturb.’ To which he replied laughingly, “I might do that.” Although the whole conversation was a playful exchange between father and son. But does that point to anything?

Well, it may have been playful and light-hearted, but there were still some concerns in the media. That his father might be doing more harm than good for his son. Because, if you can remember, he was ranked at the no. 1 spot in the NFL draft initially. But, gradually, as many as three players in Cam Ward (QB), Travis Hunter (two-way star), and Abdul Carter (DL) have all gone past him in probabilities for the NFL draft’s top picks. But many will say, how is that connected to his father?
It was reported widely that his father was actively taking part in determining the best pick for his son in the NFL. So much so that when he recently had a meeting with the Titans at the Shrine Bowl. Deion joined in through a call, which ultimately took ‘more time’ than expected. While it can never be said conclusively that the call had affected any chances of Shedeur, the downgrade in his probability rankings is not a secret. And now, it looks like Shedeur has ultimately decided to make his own decision without involving his dad too much. But where is he heading?
Shedeur Sanders’ destination in the NFL Draft is confirmed?
The NFL draft is something of a long haul for teams. They scout their players thoroughly, do the backdoor negotiations, and invite them to play at their training ground with their team. All this takes a lot of time and consideration. Because a wrong move can cost you not only in the season but in the long term too. Sanders was similarly seen interacting with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in a recent event. And it has created a lot of buzz.
The father and son duo both were seen exchanging casual words that ended with a warm embrace from Deion to Jerry Jones at the NFL Honors Red Carpet. Notably, earlier this year, Deion was also reportedly considered for the HC job at Dallas. However, the speculation ended after Jerry Jones hired his offensive coordinator, Brian Schottheimer, for the role. It was also speculated that if Deion joined the Cowboys, then he would also bring his son Shedeur with him. So, does this recent conversation mean that Shedeur is likely coming to Dallas?

The conversation appears to be taking a positive turn that would culminate in the NFL draft. There is also some added context that the Cowboys recently signed an extension for their QB Dak Prescott, who remained sidelined due to injuries after playing 9 games. So, if anything were to happen, it would be for the long term. But another team has already been touted to land him before the Dallas Cowboys.

It’s the NY Giants, who are in desperate need of a QB after they released Daniel Jones mid-season. Also, they have a third pick in the draft while the Cowboys have the 12th, so that will make matters a little complicated.
