Shilo Sanders' punishment for tardiness—too harsh or just what he needed?

Coach Prime masters his tough love approach! And he doesn’t shy away from applying it to his players, even when it comes to his own sons.

The Colorado Buffaloes head coach has a reputation for being strict about tardiness, and it seems that his safety son has felt the heat of it this time. In a lighthearted chat, Shedeur Sanders recently revealed the unexpected punishment his dad dished out to his brother for being late to practice.

On the August 21st ‘One Night with Steiny’ podcast, Buffs star quarterback Shedeur Sanders spilled the beans on how their dad, Deion Sanders, handled Shilo being late to practice. When the host asked if they’d ever been late under their dad’s watch, Shedeur quickly responded with a loud “Yes!” But he wasn’t talking about himself; he was pointing the finger at his older brother, Shilo.

Curious, the host asked, “What happens if you’re late to practice? There’s got to be something.” Shedeur didn’t hold back, revealing, “Oh, Dad made him run, like two days ago,” while Shilo sat nearby, grinning and saying, “We’re not going to talk about that.”

It turns out, this wasn’t Shilo’s first time facing Coach Prime’s discipline. Known as the “CEO of the headache gang,” Shilo has had his share of tough moments with his dad during practice. Getting yelled at by Deion is something he’s grown accustomed to, and it’s clear that Coach Prime isn’t cutting him any slack, even if they share the same last name.

Coach Prime pushes Shilo Sanders to the limit

After a tough 4-8 season, Coach Prime is all in to make 2024 a standout year for the Buffaloes. Following their Pac-12 stint, he moved the team to the Big 12 conference, setting the stage for an intense season. Since early this year, the CU facility has been filled with intense practice sessions. During one of these sessions in February, Deion Sanders noticed his son Shilo was falling behind. Without hesitation, he gave a stern order: “Hold on! Shilo, get out. Go to the back. Go to the end zone!” It was clear that Coach Prime wasn’t going easy on his defensive star, showing his tough-love approach.

Have an interesting take?

Unlike his quarterback brother, Shilo isn’t the talk of mock drafts or award watchlists, but Deion is determined to shine a spotlight on his son’s role as a safety. Even in March, while Deion and his other sons were enjoying a vacation in the Dominican Republic, while Shilo was left behind in Boulder to train. Deion made sure to remind him of his mission, saying, “Why won’t you have time to go and run around the track at the facility to stay well-conditioned?”

Well, there’s plenty of fun and banter between them, but Coach Prime’s stern love is always constant here.
