Shedeur Sanders' 55-yard bomb—Is he the next big thing in college football?

If you thought Jalen Milroe hitting the 50-yard touchdown back during the Alabama scrimmage was a big thing, you ain’t even ready for the Buffs then. We all know at this point that 2024 is the year of redemption for Shedeur Sanders & Co. Coach Prime has already revamped the o-line of the team and managed to pull in Jordan Seaton and Will Sheppard to ensure that the defense and the offense remain strong.

Now, if we shift to the star of the show Shedeur, he has made some solid progress with all the training. Buffed Prime T-Cal took to X on August 17th to share a solid 55-yard pass which Shedeur managed to land. “Play of the night for me. Shedeur Sanders 55 yards in the air to Jimmy Horn Jr,” T-Cal wrote in his post. This goes to show that when Uncle Neely had mentioned back on The Pregame Show that Shedeur’s accuracy had increased from 60 to 70-80%, he wasn’t lying.

Also, credit where credit is due, Horn was phenomenal. To be able to track that ball from over his shoulder and manage to catch it is quite the feat. “Destruction is going to be released,” was something Dewey Smith had said. He also highlighted that people were underestimating what Deion was going to bring in this season. From what we saw during the practice session, Smith is gonna stand true.

Also, if we look purely at the current roster, like Mike McChesney had mentioned after his visit to the camp; the players on the team were looking much bigger and stronger. Hell, Coach Prime even brought out former Ravens LB Ray Lewis back on August 15th to inspire the boys. Pat Shurmur is also here to help Shedeur understand what he needs to do to protect himself in the pockets. Last year, the biggest criticism that the young QB got despite securing around 30 TDs was that he was always too focused on making plays and hence exhausted himself. Shedeur became the most sacked QB last and this year the same mistakes can’t be repeated because he is gonna head to the NFL soon.

Back on August 2nd, ESPN’s Jordan Reid was the first to warn that Shedeur’s draft chances depend on how he’s going to handle his defenses this year. “There’s still plenty he needs to show in order to be viewed as a potential first-round pick,” Reid had written. While the QB had a high completion rate of around 69%, he still managed to drag a 9.8% sack at for his dropbacks. That is bad and has to be improved on.

What’s even more important to understand is the fact that Shedeur is already in the eyes of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. “Shedeur Sanders is reportedly a ‘top prospect’ in the eyes of Jerry Jones,” NFL Rookie Watch had mentioned back on August 12th. With Dak Prescott’s contract price rising, Jones needs a new QB on the team and Shedeur’s skills and the image he carries is the best option. If he wants to become the No.1 QB pick, then Shedeur needs to rock the field after the kick-offs start.
