You ever seen somebody win big, then immediately start fumbling the bag like they’re dribbling a football? That’s Ohio State right now. The confetti barely stopped falling from their national championship win, and suddenly—BAM!—Ryan Day is out here scrambling like a quarterback with a broken O-line. First, he loses offensive guru Chip Kelly, then defensive coordinator Jim Knowles dips for Penn State. So what’s Day’s next move? He goes out and hires Matt Patricia. Yes, that Matt Patricia. The same OC who tried to run an NFL offense with plays that were doomed to fail. And just when you think this couldn’t get worse, Tom Brady—Michigan’s golden boy—might’ve played a hand in Ohio State’s potential downfall.
Tom Brady didn’t just beat Ohio State when he played for Michigan—he’s still dunking on them years later. Rich Eisen, another proud Michigan man, had his moment on The Rich Eisen Show when he gave Brady his flowers for disrupting Ohio State offense: “Tom Brady is just one of the greatest Michigan men of all time. Um, he hires Chip Kelly, gives Chip Kelly Caleb.. money, you know, to go be the OC in Vegas and, um, and takes Chip away from Ohio State at the same time, which is next-level Michigan man maneuvering.” What’s he talking about? Brady, now part-owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, hired Chip Kelly to be his offensive coordinator—just days after Kelly won natty.

Brady and The Raiders handed him a big fat $6 million per year contract and snatched him away from Ryan Day’s staff. Talk about chess moves. Ohio State had the No. 1 offense in college football last season, averaging a ridiculous 429.4 yards per game, and Day was banking on Kelly to keep that machine running. Instead, he got left in the dust, watching his offense take a hit before the 2025 season even kicked off.
With his back against the wall, Day needed a defensive coordinator fast. And somehow, he landed on Matt Patricia, a name that should send chills down any football fan’s spine—especially in Michigan. Rich Eisen couldn’t hold back his sarcasm. “He’s the new defensive coordinator in Columbus, and I will just say two things here. Not the offensive coordinator—he’s the defensive coordinator.” His co-host, Chris Brockman, piled on: “I thought he was an offensive guy… he was really good at it, right?” before dropping the hammer: “He was actually the worst ever in the history of the league.”
The receipts? Oh, they’re ugly. Patricia was the head coach for the Detroit Lions from 2018 to 2020, where he amassed a 13-29-1 record. His defenses were historically and diabolically weak. The Lions ranked dead last in yards allowed, and points allowed. And setting a franchise-worst 519 points given up in a season. And if you thought that was just a Lions problem, his 2022 stint as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator was somehow worse. That offense ranked 26th in total yards and dead last in red-zone efficiency. It was such a mess that even Bill Belichick had to admit he fumbled by letting Patricia run an offense.
The Michigan curse looms over Ryan Day and Ohio State: Matt Patricia to rescue?

If you believe in bad omens, then Ohio State fans should be sweating bullets. Because guess what? Patricia has a nasty history of failing in the state of Michigan. And now? He’s supposed to be the mastermind tasked with stopping Michigan’s offense next season. Eisen didn’t miss the irony: “In the state of Michigan, when he’s (Matt Patricia) there to try and avoid a fifth loss in a row to the hated rivals.”
Oh yeah, about that streak. Ryan Day has now lost four straight to Michigan. Including last year’s 13-10 heartbreaker in Columbus. Now, with Patricia leading the Buckeye defense, he’s expected to somehow change the script?
The Buckeyes just won a natty, but their coaching staff is now held together with duct tape and crossed fingers. Losing Chip Kelly stings. Hiring Matt Patricia? That’s a whole different level of self-inflicted pain. Meanwhile, Michigan fans are sipping tea and watching Ohio State implode while their former QB-turned-NFL-owner quietly plays puppet master in the background. The 2025 Michigan-Ohio State game just got real interesting. Patricia’s got one job—break the losing streak. But if history tells us anything? He’s literally got to put some work in.
