Is Ohio State's $20 million NIL roster the future of college football or just a passing trend?

After spending five years with the program, head coach Ryan Day has revolutionized Ohio State to its best. According to him, “big talent acquisition” matters a lot. In a recent appearance on the On3 show, while talking with the analysts, Ryan Day explained several aspects of being a head coach, also mentioned Ohio’s NIL budget, and explained working with Ohio’s athletic director, Ross Bjork, and his pivotal role in it.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day joined the Andy & Ari show of On3, where they discussed many things from his coaching career to transfer portals and NIL deals. Ryan Day mentioned Ohio AD Ross Bjork‘s strategies by saying that Bjork brings a “great background” that has helped Ohio overcome modern-day college football. Day said, “It’s been great working with Ross, as we kind of move forward, trying to figure out what’s right for Ohio State.” On top of that, Day talked about fundraising in Ohio by saying, “From January all the way to June, I think that’s where it’s most different, you know, going to different events, meeting with folks you know, going out and doing these different events. You know we have a concert here that we put on to raise money for NIL.” He further said that these months are busy with managing the program’s budget and fundraising.

He discussed the transfer portal by saying, “When trying to figure out what’s right for Ohio State as we go, a big part of that is going to make sure we continue to recruit a high level and develop and retain, and then when it’s right, fill holes in the transfer portal.” Besides that, he said that Bjork has maintained recruitment with talent acquisition through NIL, along with the transfer portal. Added to that, Ohio has done fund-raising events for NIL With Bjork’s partnership, Ohio has navigated a $20 million budget. Day explained how coaching is different now from the time he joined, in Ohio, where they are always under high pressure. According to him, the focus of football coaching has turned into a larger aspect, including selecting rosters and NIL deals. “When you are a head coach, typically it’s because of the football, but then when you’re trusting the role, you know that‘s less of what your job is.” With that, he referred to a head coach’s wider role, which includes looking into a player’s off-the-field issues in their NIL negotiations.
