Does Jeremiah Smith's starting role prove Ohio State's veterans are the best mentors in college football?

There is a lot of excitement around Ohio State, and all of it is warranted. College football fanatics across are fixated on their television sets as young Jeremiah Smith confidently takes his place on the gridiron. The kid has been making a show from day one and he has proved that he is not a regular freshman. Currently, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day is watching Smith intently and has expressed only good things about Smith’s ability and attitude.

In a recent interview, Day raved about Smith’s attributes: “It’s easy to see how talented he is.” And that’s putting it lightly. From his physical attributes, he is of the correct size and speed to be a promising footballer, not to mention his catching prowess. Day noted that it’s Smith’s discipline that really stands out. “Usually guys being that talented get away with not being disciplined. It needs great effort, his focus is tremendous.”

What boosts the atmosphere is how being integrated into the team has impacted Smith. Day recalled that a seasoned wide receiver, Emeka Egbuka, returned to Ohio State partly to teach Smith. “One of the reasons Emeka Egbuka decided to come back was to help Jeremiah Smith because he saw the talent. To me, that’s what’s really cool about this team right now,” he said. There’s a selflessness in the air, and it’s infectious. The older guys see the spark in Smith and want to help him shine even brighter.

With Ohio State chomping to get into a demanding season, Smith shows he is equally up to it. After only two games, he has set highs that have people wondering if he is destined to go down in Ohio State’s record book among the best Buckeyes receivers.

But it’s not just about the numbers. Smith plays with a maturity that belies his age. Day pointed out, “He takes care of his body, he practices like a pro at such a young age.” While most 18-year-olds are just figuring out life, Smith is out there acting like a seasoned vet. As obvious in their recent games, you can see it in his ability to run his routes, in the way he contends with the defenders, in the way he connects with his QB, Will Howard. Their chemistry is really good and it is going to reap huge benefits as the season goes on.

There’s only one elephant that hasn’t been addressed – the hype. Talk of comparing him to hall-of-fame players like Julio Jones. And really, apparently, even Tim Tebow was impressed by his talent after seeing him just practice. “I was at practice during fall camp, and I was like, ‘What? This is a joke. This kid is so gifted.” With his size, speed and football intelligence, Smith is definitely a defensive nightmare.
