If you are an Oregon fan, then maybe this news is not for you. For others, you can visualize like this: Oregon can’t seem to catch a break. Days after getting hammered by Ohio State, another tragedy strikes Dan Lanning and the Ducks. Their QB Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele has decided to take his blooming career somewhere else. So, taking a leap of faith and taking his career to the next step, he has decided to hit the transfer portal. Hundreds of athletes have the transfer portal. What’s different this time? Well, it’s the timing that triggered a serious afterthought.
Brandon Huffman broke the news to the football fans, who are still reeling from the effects of Ohio State-Oregon’s Rose Bowl. He wrote, “After signing and enrolling with Oregon last month, QB Jaron Keawe Sagapolutele is expected to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal this weekend.”

This will surely come as a surprise to you if you are a Ducks fan. The fans still remember how Sagapolutele, who only signed to Oregon last month, had backed off his commitment to Cal. The No. 8 QB and No. 106 overall from the 2025 class recruit had the fans buzzing, as they also expected him to fill the QB shoes soon. But that slot is open now that Dillion Gabriel is NFL-bound. Who will be the Ducks’ next quarterback, then? And what about Sagapolutele now?

Some fans could still expect Sagapolutele to stay and grow and eventually become a starter. Why? Those might have seen his exploits at the 2024 Elite 11 Finals in June, where he drew curtains on his high school career with the Hawaii state’s all-time passing leader with 10,563 career yards. Now, that’s some eye-popping stats for some of you, and that’s why many were hopeful about him. What now, then?
Dan Lanning: filling in the critical QB slot
Dan Lanning might have a lot on his plate since losing to the Buckeyes 41-21. Maybe the result could have pushed Sagapolutele to take a second thought on his commitment to Oregon. You could also think that NIL negotiations could also have motivated him. However, it could compel Lanning to recruit and fill the QB slot to replace Gabriel. They already might have zeroed in on Dante Moore, a former five-star. He spent his freshman year at UCLA, and fans saw him as secondary to Gabriel this season. But who else is in the mix?

Austin Novosad served as the third in command, but you can expect him to move up to the second rank. While Novosad made one appearance this season, he completed both passing attempts for seven yards against Illinois. Oregon fans could expect him to step up every time Moore is forced to sit out, and the rest of the gaps were supposed to be filled by Sagapolutele, who was the future investment.
There is also a slight chance that Sagapolutele might stay after reevaluating his options. But you can expect him to change his school for a third time. Now, it all depends on Lanning, whom he feels is suitable for the job.
