On Wednesday, Porterfield Methodist Church in Albany held a prayer service after it emerged that a former University of Georgia football player was involved in a car crash a day before. The accident occurred during what was reportedly a hunting trip on St. Georgia Island. The 21-year-old Gleaton Jones, a walk-on running back for UGA suffered a severe brain injury and was placed in a Florida hospital’s intensive care unit.

Jones enrolled in the Deerfield-Windsor Academy before joining Georgia in 2021. During his high school career, he rushed for 154 yards, gaining 3.3 yards per carry, and scoring one touchdown in his final season. Furthermore, the Georgia native was a member of Dawgs under Kirby Smart as a freshman who accomplished notable milestones, like as winning consecutive national titles in 2021 and 2022.
Though he did not see extensive playtime under Coach Kirby Smart, his contributions to the team, especially as part of the roster of a victorious championship squad were valuable.
The UGA football program and the collegiate sports community rallied behind Jones’ family offering condolences and support while mourning the young loss of life.
