Is Kirby Smart's loyalty to Carson Beck a sign of strength or a recipe for disaster?

If you’re a Georgia fan, you might have breathed a sigh seeing their latest performance track. The Bulldogs are clearly sinking. Kirby Smart failed to put his mastermind to use against the Ole Miss Rebels. And guess the worst? The 10-28 loss isn’t the only stumble under their belt. It has been brewing for a long while. Although the latest downturn cost them a spot in the playoff bucket, the Dawgs have been showing signs of a sloppy offense since the Alabama fall earlier this season. You can put all the blame on Carson Beck. It’s easy. But you can’t safeguard the entire offensive line’s responsibility behind a collective stale. It’s what it is.

Georgia has set a benchmark, with the program going back-to-back national championships just a few years ago. The downward jump was scary to witness. The offense has not been looking close to what it used to. They have a real issue with third downs. They showcased a poor flair when it comes to dealing with turnovers. CFB analyst Adam Breneman went beyond the Carson Beck curse while addressing what went wrong for the No.12 Georgia. On the offense, everyone wants to trash Carson Beck, and I get it he hasn’t played well at all, and there are a lot of issues. 59 rushing yards, here’s no run game, and there’s no playmakers on the outside — and it’s causing Carson Beck to try and win the game with every throw he makes.

In the last four games, Carson Beck arguably has the worst stat in his career, scoring just five touchdowns compared to nine interceptions. He has completed 64.8 per cent of his passes for an average of 281.1 yards in the seven conference matchups. The backlash was valid, but the scapegoating wasn’t. Clear and simple. But Georgia doesn’t also have their defense right in place.

Exposing the defensive fault, Breneman noted ”First one, their lack of ability to get after the quarterback. They can’t get pressure, Georgia’s weekness really on defense is secondary. they are young, they are inexperienced, and when you can’t get on to the quarterback, you put your secondary on an island, and they can’t cover it.” That differentiates the Bulldogs from other teams, such as the Oregon Ducks and even a team they beat, the Longhorns. You win by playing tough, and when you don’t have the personnel to do so, the weaknesses get exposed quickly.

Now, keeping all the stat aside, your fan instinct might have wondered why Kirby Smart is taking the bumps and altering his decisions accordingly ahead of the key Tennesee game.

Kirby Smart won’t go for a QB change in the face of criticism

What’s your perspective on:

Is Kirby Smart's loyalty to Carson Beck a sign of strength or a recipe for disaster?

Have an interesting take?

Smart isn’t, at all, paying heed to the glaring issues that are ruining the preseason hot-cake, Georgia. The veteran coach has been called out for not taking any disciplinary action against Georgia Running back Trevor Etienne, who was accused of a DUI and some other questionable offenses earlier this year. He also garnered a lot of heat for addressing wide receiver Jake Pope, an idiot for celebrating Ole Miss’ victory with his college buddies. The narrative depicts how Smart remains silent when it is necessary to speak up and how he throws a bash for some petty issues.

When it comes to the most controversial Carson Beck situation, fans want to know whether Beck will finish as a starting quarterback after his horrible output or if Smart will call for some changes. Putting all the doubts to rest, Smart said, “Absolutely not. We’ve got a quarterback who’s completely competent, capable, and understanding of our system that gives us the best chance to win.”

You might question his sanity, but he is firmly backing Carson Beck like anything. Although Smart had some hard confession on the vertical passing game and play action, which he thinks could have been better, the coach is impressed at how his team played some really good defenses.

It’s going to be a win-or-go home situation against the Vols, and if the Bulldogs want to have any chance of defeating a well-rounded Vols team, they have to show in all phases of the game. Anything less, and you may pack your bags. It’s going to be over.
