2024 college football has kicked off. 7th September was a big day for football programs and fans. It was the season’s first game of top-10 teams. Unfortunately, defending national champion Michigan Wolverines left the fans and coaches disappointed with their ordinary performance, which was not even close to the No. 3 Texas Longhorns.
Texas dominated the game from the start and defeated the Wolverines 31-12. With yesterday’s victory, Texas has confirmed its position as a national title contender for the second year in a row. Texas’s impressive performance has raised significant concerns about Michigan’s chances of making it to the College Football Playoffs. The entire team displayed extraordinary performance yesterday, although Longhorn quarterback Quinn Ewers made a huge impact and reminded everyone that he is and will be a top player who will shine differently on the biggest stages.
Just before the new season started, Texas QB was ranked third in Heisman betting odds at +1000 on FanDuel Sportsbook. Only Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel and Georgia’s Carson Back were ranked above him. Despite showcasing impressive performances throughout his college career and being in third place, PFF analyst and co-host of PFF College Football, Dalton Wasserman, did not consider Ewers a top Heisman contender. His list of top Heisman candidates surprisingly did not include Ewers last month.

After Ewers’s performance last night, Dalton Wasserman’s perspective has changed, and he made a statement after the Longhorns’ victory. He stated, “If he plays like that going forward, Texas moves into in the inner circle of National Championship contenders.” Wasserman’s revised view on quarterback shows the exceptional impact he has made on the analyst. Ewers is known for his ability to perform under pressure and in big games. His performance in the last two games has solidified Texas’s position as a serious contender for the national title.

Quinn Ewers’s performance against Michigan Wolverines
In December 2021, former Ohio State standout Quinn Ewers made headlines when he announced his transfer to the University of Texas. With impressive stats from both Ohio State and his high school days, it was no surprise that he earned the starting quarterback role for the Longhorns in the 2022 season. Ewers didn’t just meet expectations—he shattered them. During the 2023 Big 12 Championship game, Ewers set the record for the most passing yards in a single Big 12 Championship, earning MVP honors and cementing his place as one of college football’s top QBs.
Now, in his third season as the Longhorns’ starting QB, Ewers continues to shine. His latest performance against Michigan was a high-pressure test, but he handled it with poise. From the very first quarter, he led the Longhorns on a 56-yard touchdown drive, showcasing his calm under pressure and playmaking abilities. Throughout the first half, Ewers was dialed in, completing 18 of 26 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns, spreading the ball across the field and keeping the defense on their toes.

What makes Ewers special is his ability to involve multiple receivers, and the Michigan game was no exception. He connected with five different receivers in the first half alone, demonstrating his command of the offense. His chemistry with tight end Gunnar Helm was particularly impressive, as the duo combined for six receptions, 76 yards, and a touchdown. Ewers also found the end zone with help from junior wide receiver Matthew Golden and running back Jaydon Blue, proving his ability to make key plays with a variety of weapons.
With this latest victory, the Longhorns improved to 2-0 on the season. As Ewers continues to lead the charge, the question remains: how far can he take Texas in 2024? The buzz is real, and all eyes are on their next matchup.
