Quinn Ewers‘ NFL fate continues to totter after a rash decision, ending the palpable Arch Manning– Quin Ewers debate in Texas. Ewers has severely struggled in the past season falling victim to more than one injury and some mid-season slump. Several veterans and fans have sparked doubts and debates over his overnight NFL move and suggested it would have been better if he had waited for a year and fixed his stock in a clean season, but Ewers stuck to his decision and showed up at the Combine to break the myth of his fragile talent and Ewers’ performance turned heads along with his rankings and predictions.
See, Ewers’ legacy at Texas is not up for any debate. A total of 3472 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in the 2024 season speak enough of his resilience that kept him going even despite the injury horrors, but the momentum stumbled big time. Be it some low-graded throws, poor decision-making, and the inability to face a top-tier defense head on that nasty SEC Championship loss against Georgia, Ewers left enough room for the naysayers to strike, clearly questioning his NFL future.

But during the Combine, Ewers outshined others and received a lot of praise for his properly placed throws and overall accuracy. Though he did not run the 40-yard dash, the QB completed 16 of 22 throwing attempts. There were a few passes that were slightly off target, but the majority of his showdown was decent, a big positive jolt to his NFL doomsday condition.

However, analyst Mel Kiper seems unconvinced. In the first set of the post-Combine mock draft, the renowned draft guru kept him at No. 9 after Jaxson Dart on a projected top ten list. Kiper didn’t even see Ewers as a first-round pick initially. One week down and, Kiper promoted him one step ahead at No. 8 of all QB prospects, standing right after Jalen Milroe and Dillon Gabriel. Still, it’s not something to be thrilled about.
Mel Kiper has been critical about Quinn Ewers’ throwing caliber. “I want him to put the foot on the gas. And I say, foot on the gas with that arm. I didn’t see a lot of muscle throws.” Kiper said on Ewers’ ESPN’s First Draft performance. He questioned his speed and accuracy, saying, “In the NFL, you got tight windows. You got to muscle those throws in there, right? You got to stick it in there. And the thing is, he can do it, but a lot of times he’s trying to just loft it out there, lay it out there. And to me, sometimes you got to go 80 miles an hour, OK? You can’t go 30. Gotta go 80.”
Currently, the reasons behind his rank-up in the Top QBs list can differ. But if you argue about a good enough Combine appearance, Kiper can counter-argue pointing out the designed platform of the Combine which is specifically made to look the QB good in that setup. However, regardless of the positives and negatives, the ranking might make the Dallas Cowboys think twice before going too far with their interest.

If you ask Ewers, he shows full confidence in his ability to bounce back and do better. “I think I’m the best [in the class] and the most ready for the NFL because of what I’ve been through,” Ewers said amidst the controversy. Sarkisian might support him as well, as he has always been a staunch advocate of Quinn’s remarkable resilience throughout the season. But that’s not the question. The real question lies in what the Cowboy’s scouting department thinks of Ewers.

“I think I’m the most ready for the situations that occur in the NFL, injuries, playing through injuries, having a big name behind you, continuing to play through that amount of pressure, continuing to be confident after being benched,” Ewers said. It’d be interesting to see how this steady confidence will translate with the real will of the NFL team and pans out in the future. After all, Ewers still has Texas Pro Day for his save.
