To go pro or not to. That was the question for Texas’ QB Quinn Ewers after his polarizing performance in 2024. Turnovers plagued his games that culminated in 12 costly interceptions. But the junior Longhorns’ play maker still intrigued several CFB programs for the next season. After all, a transfer portal QB with three major bowl wins is a prized target. But Ewers delivered a heartbreak to the hopeful programs with his latest decision.
After a not-so-convincing end to the 2024 season, Quinn Ewers has finally made up his mind! In a new X report by NFL Rookie Watch on January 15, “Quinn Ewers has reportedly ‘made up his mind’ and is declaring for the NFL Draft with a potential announcement within the next 24-48 hours.” The Longhorns signal caller leaves interested CFB teams like UNC, Oregon, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, and Alabama behind as he takes the next step in his football career.

For Quinn Ewers to turn down a reported $6 million deal with an anonymous CFB program, the NFL prospect must be bright. But for several NFL scouts, that’s not the case. As the report further stated, Ewers will need to have “elite pre-draft workouts” to even be a second-round pick. Among these scouts is NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay, who shared his raw take on the matter, saying, “When I talk to NFL teams – and I’ve gotten this solicited and unsolicited—when I’m talking to guys in the league, landslide, [they say Quinn Ewers] needs to grad transfer.”
On3’s J.D. Pickell also thought one more season in college football would do good for Quinn Ewers. Before his latest decision, he said, “I think Quinn Ewers should transfer to Notre Dame. Full stop. I think that is the best next step for him going forward when it comes to his career professionally and when it comes to his development as a college quarterback.” But all caution is thrown to the wind as Ewers chose his path. Why this much concern though?
Why people aren’t trusting Quinn Ewers
One thing is clear—Quinn Ewers could’ve done better. Most of this season had been plagued with fans’ chants for Arch Manning as the QB1, as he remained under scrutiny after their first 30-15 fall to Georgia. In that game, he suffered five sacks and had an interception that led Steve Sarkisian to bench him in favor of his 19-year-old backup. In his second loss against the Bulldogs in the SEC Championship game, Ewers suffered a season-high six sacks and two interceptions to add to the gravity of his career.

Ewers may have led Texas to the CFP semifinals and ended with a 13-3 record throwing for 3,472 yards and 31 touchdowns. But his final performance in the Cotton Bowl saw the same mistakes occur, making him a polarizing NFL prospect. Per NFL executives, he’s currently outside of the top 100 picks. But building trust is something to focus on in the coming days.
For now, Quinn Ewers is “LEAGUE BOUND.” And this will only lead to more speculation about his position in the NFL.
