Bill Belichick’s first season with the Tar Heels is knocking on the door. The off-season preparation is already underway, with the veteran adapting a number of means and methods to beat the stereotype that sees little to no chance for a six-time Super Bowl champion coach to strike success at the collegiate level. Not only did the former New England Patriots head coach decorate his coaching room with notable names like Will Friend, Michael Lombardi, Mike Priefer, etc., but he is also actively searching for ways to mend the gap in his pro experience and CFB reality. But it seems the road is way harder than it seems.
Bill Belichick invested a chunk of his time and schedule in hosting a long talking session with the existing college coaches to better navigate his thoughts on how to manage things at their level. Apart from nailing the transfer portal challenges with grace, Belichick took a first-thing-first approach for his team. The NFL GOAT knows exactly what he wants to do with the University of North Carolina. The general manager, Michael Lombardi, revealed that he wants an NFL-style squad at Chapel Hills. But it’s not just the dry technicalities that matter. Belichick minutely pays attention to the underlying psychology. He wants to understand the players, coaches, and staff in his team first, allowing them the room to cooperate and grow with each other.
The prudence of a coach with a legendary NFL career is obvious. A strong team bond often withstands all other storms toward a lofty goal, that is, a championship trophy. But there are a lot of bumps in the road that demand immediate attention. Analyst Kenton Gibbs dishes a harsh reality check: ”You still have to answer the question of who is your quarterback, how aggressively in the portal did you go after a quarterback, when you established whatever document whatever this, Magna Carta of UNC football, is that this manifesto that said you need all these things to be successful, what percentage of that budget went to saying, hey this is the Premier position in football, forget everything else, if we’ve got one of the guys that can do this well, we can cover over a multitude of guys who do things all right enough.”

Belichick had added 19 new players from the portal in his first week on the job. But there were no notable names that could claim to be the savior of the team in dire need. At worst, he might end up in a jeopardized roster and QB scheme, leading to an early downfall. Also, UNC isn’t one of the elite teams under an elite conference that can hold a strong ground against fans’ resurgence.
They simply can’t. ”If you got a Bama, you can make a Jones look like a first overall or first rounder, sure, but you don’t have that type of deal rolling here, so you’re going to have those types of things pop up. I think it’s going to be extremely difficult for UNC to dispel any bad motions,” Gibbs added, pointing at their tottering status as a whole that made them easy prey for the criticism freak fanbase.
This is not it, by the way. As a UNC fan, tighten your belt as there are more projected villains on their way.
Bill Belichick doesn’t get any room to breathe in a shredded program
There are still people who believe Belichick’s CFB stint is a short-time fling that will fizzle out. To fuel their thoughts and doubts, Belichick still has a realistic path to go back to the NFL. Thanks to a loose clause in his contract. Belichick’s five-year, $50 million deal has a $10 million buyout should he decide to leave, but only through June 1, 2025, at which point it will decrease to $1 million, so it will be easier for him to retreat after a one-year fancy trial at the college football mix. However, as Gibbs says, if he bags enough backlash in his first year, there is a good chance that he will sabotage the NFL chance as well.
He sketched some hypothetical reality where people would say, “
