Georgia’s offense is a tale of two extremes. From national championship glory under Todd Monken to… well, something else entirely. Now, OC Mike Bobo’s in the hot seat, and rightly so. The offense? Let’s just say it wasn’t exactly hitting the high notes. But Bobo quietly snagged a one-year extension, locking him in till 2026. Think of it as a prove it deal, like getting a second chance to remake a classic story. He’s got two years to get the band back together. What we don’t know is if Smart is still feeling the Bobo vibe going into this season with a brand new QB. Bobo’s got the pressure cranked up, thanks to Fox analyst, and now it’s: can he bring the noise?
On the March 8th episode of The Number One CFB Show, Fox analyst RJ Young didn’t hold back on Georgia’s offensive woes. He pointed out that Kirby Smart’s squad averaged just 31.5 points and 124 rushing yards per game—struggles amplified by one of the weakest wide receiver rooms in the country. But then came the bombshell on Mike Bobo. It’s looking like Georgia’s $1.5 million gamble might just be a risky bet. And Young put it bluntly, saying, “I know many Georgia fans are already upset with Mike Bobo and would love to see someone else calling the plays there, but the thing that I’ve always said is you were blessed with Todd Monken.”
Okay, so let’s talk about Todd Monken. The man who basically turned Georgia’s offense into a machine. From 2020 to 2022, he was the offensive mastermind, and back-to-back national titles, the first since ’80! He didn’t just tweak the offense, he totally reshaped it, mixing explosive plays with that super precise execution. And you know, Fox analyst RJ Young nailed it when he pointed out Monken’s experience. He wasn’t just some rookie coordinator. He’d been a head coach, a seasoned OC, which gave him this rock-solid base for working with Kirby Smart.

Young added, “Todd Monken came in, having been a head coach and having been an offensive coordinator for a very long time, and had a very good core principle when it came to working for Kirby Smart. And I love this because Kirby used this as a teaching moment for himself….. If the head coach says do this, he’s the boss. You’re going to do what he tells you to do. But if it’s a suggestion, you can take it on, and you can dismiss it without feeling as if you’re undermining the head coach. That’s important too.” Basically, Monken knew how to work with Smart, how to give input without stepping on toes. And that trust? It paid off big time. As RJ Young put it, Georgia’s offense became a powerhouse.
But then, in February 2023, Monken got that NFL itch again. The Ravens called, and the chance to work with Lamar Jackson, to bring his offensive magic to the pros. That was too good to pass up. And honestly, with his time in Tampa Bay and Cleveland, he was built for the NFL.

Fast forward to 2024, Georgia expected the same dominance under Mike Bobo. But the offense didn’t deliver. The Bulldogs put up nearly 10 fewer points per game, raising serious concerns. And Young put it bluntly, saying, “I think you’re looking for more Mike Bobo to go, ‘Hey, can you force the ba-l down the field? Or can you generate the kind of run game that we can be proud of, the one that we expect to run for 200 yards per game?’ Because 124.4 ain’t going to be cutting it in 2025.“

As of now, if Georgia wants another national title run, the offense has to step up. Under Monken, the Bulldogs’ attack was a juggernaut, ranking fifth in the nation with 40.1 points per game. Now, all eyes are on Bobo, and it looks like Kirby Smart is giving him one more shot.

Mike Bobo’s contract extension
Georgia’s coaching carousel keeps spinning. Every offseason, one of their coordinators or position coaches gets poached. In 2024, it was Will Muschamp and Bryan McClendon swapping roles. Many Bulldogs fans hoped this time it would be Mike Bobo. But guess what? Their prayers must’ve landed in the spam folder. Bobo isn’t going anywhere. He just inked a one-year extension, locking him in through the 2026 season. His salary? Climbing from $1.403M to $1.503 M on July 1, then hitting $1.603 M in 2026.
Although fans aren’t thrilled about Bobo’s extension, let’s be real—his offensive performance hasn’t met Georgia’s championship standard. So, the frustration is justified. But analyst Daniel Monroe laid it out plainly, cutting through the noise. “If Georgia wants to fire Mike Bobo after this season, they will fire Mike Bobo after this season….they don’t care; it’s one year; they’ll just buy it out. If Georgia wanted to keep Mike Bobo for 10 more years, they would still just re-up his contract a year at a time,” said Monroe.
So, in other words, Bobo’s leash might be short, with an extension or not. Love him or hate him, Mike Bobo knows how to recruit, and that’s his X-factor, the edge that keeps him in the game. Analyst Daniel put it best, pointing out, “Whether you like Mike Bobo or not, Mike Bobo is out there recruiting guys.” And he’s not wrong; look at the names—Gunner Stockton, Ryan Puglisi, Jared Curtis. All brought in under Bobo’s watch. Now, for those thinking Smart is keeping Bobo around just to protect his pockets, here’s your reality check. It’s not about the money—it’s about the talent he brings in.
